Is this brand of pellets ok for my pigs?

I currently feed my pigs Kaytee Timothy Complete Guinea Pig Food.
It says...
Crude Protein 14.0%
Crude Fat 2.0%
Crude Fiber 22.0%
Moisture 12.0%
Ascorbic Acid 100 mg. per lb.
Is this an ok brand of pellets? Or should I get a different brand, if so, which one and where to buy it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Is this brand of pellets ok for my pigs?

Hello. I'm very sorry, but this brand of food is Really bad. It has the cancer causing preservative called ethoxyquin. The best feed to feed a guinea pig are: (Best to Ok)

1.Kleenmama (Online Only, if you live in the eastern coast, than shipping is pricy.)

2. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine[Order Online or find in natural feed stores. Can also be found in PetNotSoSmart(PetSmart)(Not recommended buying at PetSmart)]

3.Mazuri 5664 (??? Sorry)

Please switch as soon as possible. If your Piggy doesn't eat right away, just be tough and leave it there and don't give any of the bad pellets, as long as they have plenty of hay and veggies, they will be find.

There's also Sweet Meadow if ordering online is an option. Mazurri 5664 acceptable and is available in many feed stores, but it's something I personally would feed only as a last resort, as it's alfalfa based and just not the greatest.

Martin is also on the acceptable list if you can't find the others though Kleemans, Oxbow and Sweet Meadow are the five star foods.

Re: Is this brand of pellets ok for my pigs?

Martins is a Canadian brand and most likely won't be found in the States. It's acceptable because there aren't a lot of good Canadian brands other than Oxbow and I don't believe KM ships to Canada. Like Mazuri 5664, it's alfalfa based.

A lot of times these types of questions have been asked repeatedly. You may want to get into the habit of doing a forum search before posting your questions as you will most likely find the answer to what you are looking for by searching.

Re: Is this brand of pellets ok for my pigs?

I found out that KM does indeed ship pellets to Canada. She just cannot ship the hay.

Re: Is this brand of pellets ok for my pigs?

It's okay, I was using the same brand. I can't believe I didn't read through the entire list of ingredients. I just looked at the first few to make sure it was mostly timothy hay (which was a step above the alfalfa hay pellets my obese piggy was being fed). Unfortunately, ethoxyquin is a really nasty preservative that can cause cancerous tumors in piggies (and other small mammals). It's really no good at all and they shouldn't be consuming it in any amount. They make sure to hide it in the middle of the ingredient list. I recently switched to Oxbow Cavy Cuisine and my pig likes it much better. It's only $5 more per bag which will be worth it if it saves you a costly surgery or euthanasia fee I went through the cancer (and euthanasia) thing with a beloved pet rat and it was awful.
