Peanut Hay?

I know peanuts are bad for guinea pigs... but what about the hay they make?

I have access to several bales of it. Of course, I would take out any peanuts still on the plants before giving it to da boys. I don't THINK it has lots of fat like the peanuts themselves do, but I don't know much about it other than that, other than some horse people I know swear by it, using it in place of alfalfa as it doesn't make their horses go bonkers like alfalfa seems to.

I have never seen that type of hay listed here on cavycages or on guinealynx. I did a search and these are the results I came up with.

1) Peanut hay is more like alfalfa than any other hay.
2) Consists of the vines and leaves of the peanut plant.
3) Peanut hay is usually very sandy.
4) It is usually harvested after the peanuts from the plants have been removed.
5) The hay is perennial peanut which is a legume.
6) It is becoming popular with horse people and is even fed to some cattle in the winter months.

Since I found several sites that say it is a legume hay and not a grass hay, it may be ok to mix with alfalfa for young cavies under 6 months old. I don't know if I personally would replace alfalfa because it has nutrients in it that young cavies can benefit from.
