Not eating much hay

Hi all,
I have been reading over this thread off and on for awhile now as I am a first time owner. I have had my piggie for about two months now. My concern is that he seems to have stopped or at least eats a lot less of his hay these days. He used to devour hay when we first got him but now seems to only nibble at it and goes more for the pellets. I originally bought Kaytee brand timothy hay not knowing any better. About a week ago I got a small bag of Oxbow Orchard Grass to see if he liked that better but he does not seem to eat a ton of that either. I have also noticed that his poo is definitely looser than it was in the past. He does not have diarrhea but it is close. I am just wondering if there is anything I should be doing differently or a different kind of hay to try? Neither of the bags of hay I have appear to be moldy as I have looked at them and smelled at them. Any adivice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Not eating much hay

Have you tried kleenmama hay?

They usually love that. Is his weight the same? Have you had his teeth checked?

Re: Not eating much hay

I noticed my pigs don't like their hay if it's left on the rack for too long. I also noticed that they don't like using the grid hay rack (harder for them to get hay out). Now I have hay loft for them. They like eating hay off the floor. One down side is that they also pee on their hay and I have to replace them every night. Maybe your piggie is picky like mine.

Re: Not eating much hay

I've given my guinea pigs both Oxbow's Orchard Grass and Botanical hay and they definitely eat less of both of them than they eat of Oxbow's Timothy hay. So maybe pick up a small bag of the Timothy hay and see if he eats more of that?

Re: Not eating much hay

I have not had him looked at by a vet but I have looked at his teeth and they look fine. He is also still gaining weight and is eating plenty of pellets which is why I believe its nothing medical. I will try buying a small bag of Oxbow timothy hay and see if he prefers that.
