Vitamin C

How much Vitamin C should I be feeding my piggies daily? Every page I look at says different things. So which one is right or at least good enough for my pigs? Thanks!

Re: Vitamin C

They need to receive 10-30mg per kg of weight. Vitamin C should come primarily from veggies. That's why you need to feed the minimum of 1 cup of veggies per day made up of primarily leafy greens. Also if you give them bell pepper on a daily basis as it's a good daily food that's high in C.

Please see the Nutrition Charts sticky thread at the top of this forum for good diet advice.

How much what? If you are talking about veggies, that would be another thread because this one is about Vitamin C.

Re: Vitamin C

I don't need to feed my pigs extra Vitamin C at all. They get it in their regular diet.

I make sure they get some bell pepper and lots of dark green leafy veggies plus I make sure to feed them a pelleted guinea pig food that has 'stabilized' Vitamin C in it. The brand I use is Oxbow because they always put an expiration date on their packages for one year out from manufacture. It's easy to make sure that the pellets are fresh that way. Do not be tempted to use a different kind of pellet, since GP pellets are the only ones that have Vitamin C.

Here at GPC that's pretty much the way we do it. No one has to feed them extra as long as we follow the basic GPC feeding guidelines.

Sometimes people do feed the pigs a little bit of Vit C tablets just for a treat though. Oxbow makes a Vitamin C tablet that you can feed your pigs if you are really worried about it though. They are hard to find and expensive though..

Re: Vitamin C

If you are feeding a quality brand of pellets they should contain photostable vitamin c. A good selection of veggies fed daily (see nutrition sticky) should be ample vitamin c for any pig. Do not use those drops in the water.
