Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Hi, I am about to introduce my piggies to Oxbow Performance for my babies and Oxbow Cuisine for my older boar and sow. My two little girls are housed with they mom. My question is: I will have two place two containers in the girls cage, one with the cuisine and the other performance. Would it be ok if the mom eats from the performance? And, is it too late to feed the four 2 month old babies the performance? Thanks. |

It will be okay if the mom eats some of the performance. Another thing you could also do, is, instead of feeding alfalfa pellets, you could supplement the younger pigs with a handful of alfalfa hay once a day. |

The Cavy Performance is an alfalfa-based pellet, and it is supposed to be fed until they are 6 months old, so nope! 2 months isn't too late at all. I am not sure whether or not it would be ok for mom to eat from the performance also. I know that lactating sows (sows that still have babies nursing from them) still need the alfalfa. There are some other options when it comes to providing specialized nutrition for immature cavies. You can seperate them from mom for just a minute, and feed them calcium-rich veggies such as parsley and mustard greens. I am not sure how you would provide the Cavy Performance to them in a way that would prevent the mother from eating too much of it.....hopefully someone with more experience in that field will see this thread and help you soon. |

It's more important that the babies get extra calcium and protein than the specific formula. I would feed them all Cavy Cuisine and give the pups extra veggies at lap time, or even alfalfa hay while they are away from momma at floor time or lap time. |

Ok, so then the best thing would be to feed them all the Cuisine and forget the Performance and give extra veggies to the babies. Any Alfafa hay would be good or is there a specific brand that would be better? I think Oxbow has Alfafa. As soon as I get all this down packed, I will place the order. Thanks. |

If you can get Oxbow, then go for it. The only better hay is KM's. |

The S/H fee was three time more than the hay! That was sad because their 3rd cut hay looks very nice. So I ended buying hay locally at a feed store. So I guess the only other choice I have id to oder ot from Oxbow or Dr Foster & Smith, which it's where I get most of my supplies for the entire animal family. If you happen to know of a place, maybe closer to me??, Miami Fl., or someone else on line that the S/H won't cost an arm and a leg, I would appreciate it. Thanks. |

I second Paula's advice. It's what I recommend as well. |
