Apples

I have tried everything to get my guinea pig to eat vegetables and fruit, and the only one that he'll actively eat is apples. I know this should be given in very limited quantities because of the high sugar content, so I only give them twice a week. In between this, I try romaine lettuce, cherry tomato's, green bell peppers, parsley, strawberries, blueberries, and carrots. Nothing. The bowl just sits there, untouched for the day. *Sigh* This is quite frustrating. I do give him about 1/2 cup oxbow pellets each day (he's almost 5 months old), and I also give him unlimited hay. He eats both quite well. The only problem I see with this is he was store bought (unfortunately, I was naive at the time). I know that cavies bought from a pet store are more likely not to eat fruits and veggies because they're not fed that in the store (usually, only cheap pellets).

Has anyone here ever had this problem? Is there anything I might do to rectify this? Right now, I'm only feeding him once a day, simply because he doesn't seem interested. I chop up his food and try my best to make it appealing, but it's still to no avail.

On the bright side, I'm currently pursuing adopting another guinea pig (Woo hoo!). Perhaps when my current cavy gets a friend, he will be more inclined to eat the veggies and fruit (I read here that this sometimes occurs). I'll be sure to keep everyone abreast on how that goes

Re: Apples

When I got my first guinea pig she didn't eat vegetables either. But when I got her a friend she started eating vegetables galore. I think it helps to have some competition. Good luck.

Re: Apples

Keep offering, but another guinea pig who eats vegetables and fruits can show him that eating fruits and vegetables are okay. So adding another guinea pig will do wonders for your current pig.

Re: Apples

Agreed, I've noticed that ou cavy ate a wider variety when we got the other two. So I would get him/her a buddy to help out.

Re: Apples

At 5 months, he can have unlimited pellets for a while. Until he reaches 6-9 months.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But only because of your charts, which are indispensable. Thank you so much for all that information

Few other questions: When I get another guinea pig, do you feed them both from the same dishes, or do you think separate is better? And since I'm leaning (hoping) towards getting a younger pig, won't that mean I'll need to keep a good amount of pellets available in the cage? Will that interfere with the way Doodles is suppose to eat? And finally, after 9 months, since oxbow is an alfalfa-based pellet, is it recommended to switch to another type?
