Sweet Meadow treats

I had such a hard time finding hay that my Guinea Pig really like until I got him a bag of Sweet Meadow hay. He loves it! I was just wondering if anybody that orders from them buys the treats that they sell and if they are good? I'm glad he is eating more hay, but the more that goes in..the more that comes out. I think I'm going to change his name to Sir Poopalot.

Re: Sweet Meadow treats

You should never give piggies any kind of commercial treat. The only treats they should get are the occasional very small piece of fruit (as per Ly's nutrition charts), no more often then 1x-2x a week.
You can also try giving them (at first, very small limited amounts) of fresh grass (no chemcials). You can gradually, slowly increase the amount of fresh grass you give them each day, so as not to upset their tummies.
Also on Ly's nutrition charts, you can find some examples of forages (weeds) that could be considered very tasty "treats" for cavies. These should also be introduced slowly, and must be chemical-free (organic). Lots of piggies consider dandelion greens a delicacy (like piggy caviar xD), but don't give them too much of those too often, maybe 2x-3x a week, b/c dandelion greens' calcium to phosphorous ratio isn't great, too much calcium.
Guinea pigs can also eat the entire dandelion plant, roots and all. Just wash the roots really well b/c they had all that dirt on 'em. Also, don't take dandelions or any other forage from near the edge of a road, b/c the fumes from vehicles can actually be absorbed into the plants. I also heard somehwere that dandelions from garden areas taste better and have more nutrition than ones from the lawn...

Hope this helps!

Re: Sweet Meadow treats

As good as Sweet Meadow is, I would not give it. The only treats that are necessary are veggies and fruits. You can even make special piggy treats with their favorite hay and stuff in it.
