Ethoxyquin??? I found out about this when I was looking online for reviews for Kaytee Timothy Complete pellets, they seemed adequate till I could afford more of the pellets I was buying him and I was suprised Kaytee has a semi-decent pellet that wasn't a junk mix. Yet on some sites I found warnings about the preservative Ethoxyquin. I found a LOT of conflicting information from this preservative being linked to renal failure to that no harm had come to any pets at the hands of it. Who's right and should I not feed Frankie these pellets? I did find a couple places that sell Oxbow so I thought of trying that.
So, is this Ethoxyquin dangerous as I read it was? Why is there so much conflicting information? Help is appreciated.

Re: Ethoxyquin???
From what I've read on this site I'm pretty sure that it is a preservative that has been linked to causing cancer in animals. I would avoid it altogether. Better safe than sorry!

Re: Ethoxyquin???
I just found that ethoxyquin is in Probiocin so I need to do some more factual research on this. You are right, there is a lot of conflicting information which is why I need to search scientific sights.
I found some information on humans just not cavies. Post whatever you find!

Re: Ethoxyquin???
As far as I know, it is a preservative found in a lot of pet store foods that can potentially cause cancer in animals.

Re: Ethoxyquin???
Kaytee/Animal Planet pellets not only have ethoxyquin but they have low quality ingredients in their pellets which make them a low quality brand. I've posted info about ethoxyquin on the forum before.
Ethoxyquin is a preservative that is linked to causing cancer in some animals. It's ranked up there with BHA and BHT which are both pretty bad preservatives. Do a search and you should find some info about why I don't recommend using foods with ethoxyquin in them.

Re: Ethoxyquin???
Ethoxyquin, BHA, and BHT are all extremely questionable preservatives, which, in my opinion, shouldn't be used in anything anymore.

Re: Ethoxyquin???
I find the below link extremely useful when it comes to pellets & their choices:
Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Cavy Pellet Analysis
(Guinea Lynx would be one of the most scientific site for GP out there and you can rely on their info I'm sure)
It tells you what to avoid when choosing pellets and if you do love your GP as you would yourself... I am sure if you as GP would not want some "additives" in your food, you would not feed it to your GP.
Although I do not eat my GP's leftover pellets... I do eat their leftover snacks (carrots, grapes & cilantro) when I am hand feeding them during laptime; yes... I love kissing my piggies too & right on the lips. :P
Kaytee's product is crap period (yes, I have a big bag of left overs that I ground up in my garbage disposer; I would not even give it to my FIL to use for his compost pile), even their hay quality...
Plus they are not in-expensive either so you do not get what you pay for even... so what is the point in buying their stuff?
I dunno.
