moldy hay?

Does anyone have a picture of what moldy hay looks like?

That may sound dumb, but I would just like to see a picture so I know for sure what it looks like. I know it is white, but what else?

Does it just look like mold on bread?

I mean it should be pretty obvious if its mold right?

Re: moldy hay?

Sorry I don't have any pictures. We used to have a horse and sometimes the hay was moldy. It was pretty obvious. I usually smell any hay I buy and if it is green and smells fresh and fragrant, I buy it. Sometimes hay looks old and doesn't smell fragrant and this is the stuff to avoid.

Re: moldy hay?

You can usually smell it before you can see it appearing. I got a bag once and it didn't look any different on first glance, but the smell was so musty it was quite obvious it was no good.

Re: moldy hay?

It may feel slightly damp too, but not always, and you may be able to see mould growth on it (fuzzy and white/ grey) as well as the foisty smell. Good hay should be green, dry, smell sweet and not be dusty - don't bother with anything else.

Re: moldy hay?

Does anyone have pictures of good and bad hay? I recently bought a bag of Oxbow hay, but it was from the store shelf. Is this good enough? Also, what exactly does 'stemmy' mean?
