Pellets

I tried to search my question, but didn't find any specific answers.

What kinds of pellets are "junk" and what are the good ones? I can't seem to tell the difference... I am getting a 6 week old guinea pig on Saturday and am trying to get everything before she gets here. I know that she needs alfalfa-based pellets, but all the pellets I can find on PetSmart have alfalfa in them...

Which brands are good to buy and preferably available in stores...? And how many pounds should I buy for one guinea pig if I'm giving her veggies and hay, too?

Re: Pellets

Pellets that have nuts, seeds, or anything added into them are considered "junk." Just plain old pellets are what you want. Alfalfa based, like you said.

Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome
Oxbow is great, that's what I'm using now.

Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home
Kleenmama is also a great choice.

I have a 10lb bag of pellets for two pigs, and it's going last for quite some time. Over two months, probably. Make sure to keep it in a cool place to retain nutritional value the longest possible time.

Re: Pellets

Basically, most piggie foods are crap!

Check the ingrediants before you buy.... they must be pellets only (not a mix), specifically for guinea pigs, and contain a stabilised form of vitamin C.
The first ingrediant should be timothy (for adult piggies). Piggies under 6 months can have alfalfa based pellets, but they are too high in calcium for adults unless very strictly limited.
They must NOT contain ethoxyquin - this is a preservative known to be carcinogenic.

Really, the ONLY good foods are Oxbow and Kleenmama's.

Re: Pellets

I checked Kleenmama's, I made an account, and it said the shipping from 1 x 26 lbs. is 26 dollars!! That's really expensive for shipping... I'll check out Oxbow, though...

Lucky! Oxbow's shipping isn't much better than KM's, I wish I had a store that carried their products near by, would be so convenient!

Yeah, I noticed. For a 10lb. bag of pellets the shipping was like 18 dollars...

Re: Pellets

The junk pellets are HARTZ, KAYTEE, and anything store brand I would stay away from you don't know what is in it.
Oxbow is good, KM's, and Mazurri5664, Sweet Meadow.

Re: Pellets

Here's a link to more info on good quality pellets: Guinea Lynx :: Pellets It gives info on what to look for, and also a list of different brands and what their ingredients are. I've only used Oxbow, and haven't tried any of the others. Oxbow is hard enough to get! I have to drive to the nearest city which is 100 miles away. Luckily, I happen to go there every so often to visit friends/family, but I always have to make sure to stock up when I do go.
