Allergic to hay!

[FONT=Georgia]My mother is allergic to the hay we have, which is timothy. Runny nose and sneezing.

She knows giving them back to the rescue would absolutely kill me, and she doesn't want to have to either, but she's miserable and doesn't want to be anymore. Are there any suggestions on what I can do to help her? The hay is currently in the basement, and I filled the racks, not her.

Please, I really don't want to give them up.

Re: Allergic to hay!

Try Bluegrass hay instead of timothy. It worked wonders for me.

Re: Allergic to hay!

Both me and my mum are also allergic to hay, we just try to work round it.

We've found some hay worse than others - even different types of timothy. Try a different brand maybe, I find Oxbow doesn't bother me so much as others I have tried.

I also keep the hay covered - I built a hay box from left over coroplast. Build it like the cage base, only smaller with taller sides, cut a hole in the front, then make a lid. My pigs get their hay in a hay rack in there so it doesn't fly around everywhere.

You could also look into air purifiers - they are supposed to remove allergens etc from the air.

Bluegrass worked for me as well. I ordered mine from KleenMama. She will also let you order a sample. You just pay the shipping associated. Here is the link to her site.

Re: Allergic to hay!

I would also suggest the bluegrass.

I've had a lot more allergy/sinus problems with timothy than with bluegrass.

Kleenmama's is the best. It's soft, smells great, and the piggies love it!

Re: Allergic to hay!

One thing that helps allergy sufferers is to put hay in paper sacks then just give the sack of hay to the pigs. If you need to use gloves and a face mask to fill the sacks.

KM's bluegrass (blue orchard grass) is great for those that have allergies.

Re: Allergic to hay!

I found great difference between types of hay too. My current orchard grass hay makes killer dust.

Ly's method will work really well, based on my experience. If face mask is not enough, Homedepot sells good respirators at $30. It's in paint section.
