Question on Grass I know you aren't supposed to let your piggies on the grass if it's been treated. I was wondering if this was just if it was treated with fertilatizers. Because my dad had our grass treated a few weekends ago with lime (like the stone not fruit) and some chemical to kill insects. My dog and cat both go out on the grass and eat it and have never been sick. The things sprayed on the grass are supposed to be animal safe so I was wondering if it would be ok for my pigs to eat the grass or if I should not risk it.

Re: Question on Grass I wouldn't risk it. I believe there was a post recently about lawns treated with lime. If I can locate it quickly, I'll post it here. edit Hmm, I can't seem to locate it, but I'm sure Ly will be by soon to give you better information! ![]() Last edited by Haley0489 : 05-02-08 at 02:49 pm.

Re: Question on Grass Lime is ok for the grass, as it is a natural stone that evens out the PH level in the grass. We use lime also. But the insect killer is not ok. Any type of chemicals on the grass are not ok.

Re: Question on Grass Thanks. I'm not really sure what was put to kill the bugs I need to ask my dad. I just remember him saying about something "blah blah blah to kill the bugs." He might let me fence off the area where there is no grass so I could plant new grass just for the piggies.

Re: Question on Grass Lime should be fine. The bags we buy here are just crushed limestone. Which makes up majority of the rocks here. I live near a limestone quarry and we lined all our stalls with crushed limestone. You will have to figure out the ingredients to the insect killer though and chances are it's not safe. Even if it's not spread directly on the grass your feeding them rain will wash it across the yard contaminating your patch of grass. If your dad insists on spraying the yard I'd just grow some pots of grass indoors for them to make sure it's safe. Your other option is a raised bed garden but even then the wind can blow chemicals that are spread around it onto the raised patch you planted.

Re: Question on Grass I would wait a bit. Do more research and try to find out. Pigs are very fragile, be careful!

Re: Question on Grass Sorry to post again so soon, but I can't stop thinking about this! To me, it's just not worth the risk! There are too many things that I can't control outside in the grass. What if a stay dog or cat gets in your yard...what if the wind or rain carries some neighbor's chemicals to your grass? I don't live in the country, but I've seen squirrels, ground hogs, and opossums in my yard and I saw a deer in the field 2 blocks away! What if they have some sickness? Yesterday, my neighbors' dog peed in his yard real close to the fence and when he did, the 'stream' came through the fence onto my grass! I work late and when I come home, I almost always see some cat or dog wandering around.Uh-uh, I just will never take the chance! And sometimes 'animal-safe' only means cat and dog safe...not piggie safe!

Re: Question on Grass I haven't given them any of the yard grass. I planted some in some pots for right now and need some dirt to fill this flower box I found under our deck and I'm gonna plant more grass in there. I have to find somewhere to put them so when the people spray the grass it doesn't get on the piggies same with our strawberries we have to cover those.
