| My name is James and I have a question concerning my two guinea pigs named Domino and Shadow. Ok to the point, both these guinea pigs came from a store and had no idea what vegetables were and what to do with them. I have tried many techniques such as crushing the vegetables up and hand feeding them so they could get the taste and smell of it, this did not work. Next I tried what my brother Jacob told me to do which was to put the vegetables on top of their pellets so they would have to get through the vegetables to get to the pellets, I have been using this technique for about a month now . This has worked but only a little because they eat very little of the vegetables and them throw it to the side to get to their pellets. I know guinea pigs "attack" veggies until there is nothing left, I know this from all of my other seven guinea pigs. Well what I'm asking is if you know how I can get these two to eat their veggies properly like all the other guinea pigs so they can get the extra vitamins that they need that pellets do not offer that much of. Help would be greatly appreciated I am desperate. |

| Re: Guinea pigs not eating all of their veggies The pigs need time to adjust. They're very cautious about what they eat. It can just take a lot of time for them to learn that they aren't going to die from eating these very large, strange things. Perhaps they're just very, very picky pigs and they don't like what you're giving them. I'm sure you've already perused this, but Ly's thread on what to feed guinea pigs is great: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html Try your pigs out with different types of veg and see if they like those any better. Otherwise I think you just need to be patient, offer a varied diet, and hope for the best. If you're very concerned about the vitamin issue, you could feed them a Vitamin C tablet. In the thread above Ly recommends 25-50mg daily. I've found the easiest way to do this is to grind the correct amount of an easily-available vegan (IE: no gelatine etc) Vitamin C tablet with the tiniest bit of water to make a paste, and let them lick it off my (very clean) fingers. Goes down a treat with my boys. Hope that helped a little. |
