Exclamation Picky hay eater

My piggie has always liked the cheap sunseed Timothy hay but then suddenly stopped eating it it looked much greener than the bags we had gotten in the past. Then he liked the petco hay and we got a bag last week that was greener and he won't eat it?? He's eating his pellets and veggies. His teeth seem fine and he was checked my the vet recently. Is there a different kind of hay that's not so green?? Or would one of those grass hays be good.He seems to like the brown dried out stuff. Which seems weird to me.
I have tried kaytee, oxbow, and other brands.

Re: Picky hay eater

I used to by hays like kaytee then I tried oxbow. A friend of mine gave me a large bag of kaytee timothy hay and the pigs wouldn't touch it! I had to give it away. Now I use KM and the pigs won't eat the oxbow.

Re: Picky hay eater

I'm not sure what brands specifically, but I do know some store-bought brands of hay use dye to make their hay look greener. Maybe the greener hay has higher concentrations of dye. I'd switch to KM's or Oxbow if I were you.

You want to go for a higher quality hay like Oxbow or Kleenmama.

Re: Picky hay eater

My guinea pig is also finicky when it comes to hay. She like Kaytee hay but she did NOT like Oxbow hay. Luckily I had purchased a small bag so I didn't waste much. I now have a large order of KM hay. She seems to like it well enough.

Try and remember that guinea pigs have tastes just like we do. Sometimes they don't like the best stuff like we think they should. Just because people say that Oxbow or KM is the best, doesn't mean much to a guinea pig. Make sure that he has a good variety of foods and he will be fine.

Re: Picky hay eater

Oxbow and KM feeds are nutritionally better. My pigs never turn their nose up at them.

Re: Picky hay eater

I've actually tried KM's and oxbow. Maybe I need to try to find out what cuts are different colors through the year.

Brome is a grass hay and should be fine, as far as I know.

Re: Picky hay eater

ANY grass hay can be fed on a daily basis. It doesn't have to be timothy.
