I have store bought hay and

I had a bale (found in the road). That has been eaten all up. Until I get another bale I bought some Kaytee (?). It seems to me they are not eating all of it. They leave the thicker pieces on the bottom of the cage. The baled hay was much thinner and seemed to have more varity. Is this typical?
I really don't like cleaning up hay like that unless it was my idea

You found a random bale of hay in the middle of a road and you fed it to your guinea pigs?

Re: I have store bought hay and

LOL at first, I also thought this was strange...then however...I see that you are from my home land.... I miss Maine so much.... Denver sucks, you never find bales of hay here for the taking!

No one give this nice lady flack for this, Maine is God's country, and sometimes, you just see random hay bales from someone that maybe didnt tie them down so good in their truck! LOL!

I buy Kaytee brand timothy hay from Target. I think the "large" 48 oz bag is like $5.99. If you go to Petco or Pet Smart that same bag is $12.

I weep for not having a family run feed store anywhere near me!!!

Oh yeah also, I found that if you stuff a couple of good handfuls of hay into a plain paper bag used for lunches, it cuts down on the mess, and my gosh, dont they have fun rolling around in that bag! LOL!

Re: I have store bought hay and

Kaytee bagged hay is a hit or miss. Sometimes you get a good bag, sometimes you get a stemmy bag. Pigs don't care too much for the thicker harder stemmy pieces. They prefer the softer pieces that are easier to chew. Hard stemmy pieces can cause eye pokes so it's best to remove those.

Have you ever thought about buying hay from Oxbow or KM's. KM's hay is very good and you rarely find hard stemmy pieces in the 3rd cut and I've never seen them myself in the Bluegrass.

Recently we saw a pick-up with one of those huge round bales. Hubby said "If that falls off I am not picking it up"

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

I used to help our neighbors hay each summer, we got like $10 for 8 hours of work and thought we were rich.... I think the hardest jobs in the world are farming and clamming/worming.

Where abouts in Maine are you located? I am from the mid-coast.

I want to try some different hays/grasses for my guinea pigs. Like some orchard grass maybe? It looks very soft, and non-eye pokey.

Re: I have store bought hay and

I told him if we did we would just need to get more guinea pigs or maybe rabbits.

I vagely remember seeing a truck of hay when we went to get gas that same day. It would not have been in the road for long since it was dead center of the lane we were in. I had asked around, but there are so many hobby farms here I wouldn't be able to find out who it belonged to.

I am on a dirt road in Limerick. It is in western Maine near the New Hampshire coast.
