Not interested in the same pellets/hay anymore

When I first bought KM pellets and hay, my piggies were crazy over them. Previously I fed them Kaytee pellets and timothy hay.

I divided my 10lb bag of KM pellets into 3 ziplock bags and froze 2(in double ziplock bags). When the first one was finished I took out a bag from the freezer. Over the course of a week or 2, I noticed that my piggies were not eating much of the KM pellets at all.

After some time, worried that they were not eating enough pellets, I went out and bought some Kaytee pellets. The piggies went to town on them!

I read and Kleemama also told me that the pellets will keep well in the freezer. I am very happy with the KM pellets because when my piggies were on them, their coats became much softer and much shinier, and they seemed really happy.

Now they are not liking these same pellets anymore. Same with the hay(except for the freezing part of course). I'm confused.

Are GPs known to change their tastes in food every now and then??

If it really becomes a problem, I would mix it over the course of a few weeks. This is what I would do to ensure that they are eating.

Re: Not interested in the same pellets/hay anymore

thanks auburnmare5, it's a sensible solution.

I tried that and they just seemed to pick out the Kaytee ones. When I was introducing the KM pellets, they picked out the KM pellets and left the Kaytee ones. And later, when they began ignoring the KM pellets, I mixed in the Kaytee and they picked out the Kaytee ones....I have very picky piggies!!!

We don't mind throwing out what they don't eat, but I'm just puzzled and curious with the change in taste. If anyone else has the same experience, or has a possible explanation, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks again.

Pellets are the least part of any pigs diet so if they aren't eating many that's fine. I'd get rid of the Kaytee and just feed KM's. Just make sure they each have at least a cup of veggies per day and unlimited grass hay.
