My pig will not eat veggies!!

My guinea pig will not eat his veggies. He hates carrots, will eat a bite of an orange. The only things he likes are blueberries and stawberries. It might be he likes softier things, since he is only a little baby. Hes about eight weeks old, maybe less!

Keep trying leafy greens. Fruits should be fed sparingly once or twice per week.

Re: My pig will not eat veggies!!

My piggy did the same thing when we first brought her home. Keep trying, he will get it soon enough. Maybe try something different. There are different types of lettuce that are milder tasting. Maybe that will get his taste buds happy. Also, endive is a favorite as well as radicchio (sp). It's a small red cabbage looking lettuce. Also try cilantro.

Don't worry, he will start eating more soon.

He probably is just being sneeky and not eating his veggies so that you will then bring out the fruit.
They are smarter than you think.

Re: My pig will not eat veggies!!

My piggie was like that when I first got her. He's just not used to eating it because he's a baby, and doesn't understand. First try something that almost all pigs like(instead of the more difficult things) like parsely or lettuce. First try hand feeding. You may have to gently push it into his mouth to even get him to try it. If he doesn't eat the lettuce/parsely by hand after a couple of tries, leave it in his pellets or hay and see if he will eat it on his own. I know it's difficult at first, but eventually he will figure it out. Don't keep offering different things until he really starts to eat one thing first. Patience is key!

You may have to get some vitamin C supplements(not the kind that can be put in their water) untill he eats veggies.

Ok! I have been hand feeding him his veggies, most of the time it takes a while for him to notice.

Re: My pig will not eat veggies!!

This is a tough one, I know, as we WANT to give our piggies the best, but some just don't eat it!

our beloved Theo is resistant to leafy greens of any kind.... he'd just sniff and move on. But just the other day (2 days ago i think) he actually started to nibble at the Cilantro! WOWOWW, that was a big deal here!

He hasn't nibbled as much since he did that first day but I keep offering it. He's been offered a baby carrot daily but hasn't nibbled it since the first day we got him. I've tried cutting the baby carrot lengthwise, shredding it, cutting it into "chips" and such, still nothing.

But we keep offering things-- such as Romaine lettuce and spring mix lettuce blend-- in the hopes he'll catch on one day.

Re: My pig will not eat veggies!!

When I first brought home my two guinea pigs and gave them salad greens, they ignored the pile and didn't eat more than a nibble. The next day I put out the same pile of salad greens during floor-time, and they cautiously nibbled on a few leaves. On the third day, they devoured it! I think it's really a matter of patience and slow introduction. If they aren't used to eating a variety of vegetables they might not even think it's really something to eat.

After getting them to eat mixed greens, I started introducing other vegetables, like grape tomatoes and bell peppers, and they did the same thing: ignore, ignore, ignore, enjoy!

If you really think the large size and hardness of vegetables could be dissuading your guinea pig, you could cut the vegetables into smaller pieces, but honestly he's probably capable of eating them as they are. Even if he really likes fruits, there's just too much sugar for that to be healthy in the long run.

Like everybody says...patience, patience, patience! And sometimes, you do have to hand-feed before they get the idea!

Will they eat them if you hand feed them? But as mentioned earlier, patience.
