Violets?

I have a cluster of violets in my yard that are in bloom. Can the pigs eat them? If so can they have the flowers and leaves?

Re: Violets?

I don't know the answer, but I'm glad you asked as I have a pot of violets on the table and my piggie tried to take a bite this morning. I moved the pot before he could, but it would be nice to know.

Re: Violets?

Uh.

I know that the leaves and flowers are edible to humans, so I wouldn't expect them to be poisonous, but I'm not sure if they have excessive amounts of say, Vitamin A, or some other substance that would make them unhealthy for guinea pigs.

In other words, I think a nibble won't hurt them, but I'm not sure I'd give them a handful until someone with a little more knowledge steps up with a good answer.

Re: Violets?

They can have the flowers and leaves. They can also eat pansies (flowers) and nasturiums (flowers and leaves).

Just feed it in moderation and start slowly with forages until they become more used to them.

Edit: I wanted to come back and add that african violets are poisonous.

Re: Violets?

This just proves that you can't trust or believe everything you hear or read. I was searhing around on the internet for the answer to this question and actually found a site that said that violets, including African violets are safe for a guinea pig to eat. They just advised not to give them too much too soon.

Be careful what you feed your pets...the mistake you make might make the difference in your pets life.

Re: Violets?

Sometimes when I don't know the specific answer to a diet related question, I go do a search on guinealynx and when it's about forages, I look on two different poisonous plants lists that are linked through gl and on the forums. I trust gl's info.

Re: Violets?

Now I'll have to plant some violets, pansies, and nasturiums(I've never heard of these but I guess I'll find them somewhere. Hey, I could plant a bunch of these together in my garden, couldn't I? Are they all compatible with each other?

What is the best amount of sun for each of those 3 plants?
