More Food?

I have three pigs total, I feed them every day about 1/4 of a cup per pig, maybe a little less. They're fine when they're eating, but when they don't have food they just SCREAM all the time, especially in the evening. I offer them fresh veggies every day and they inhale them so they don't last very long in the cages. They stop yelling when they have food, but I don't want to overfeed them...am I not feeding enough? Is there something else I can try? They just get kinda annoying with the constant wheeking...

Re: More Food?

I feed each pig 1/4 cup of Oxbow pellets a day. I give them 1/8 cup in the morning and 1/8 cup at night (per pig). That way they have something to munch on later. I had the same concern as you. But everyone said I was feeding the right amount and that just because they scream at me doesn't mean I have to feed them. I know it's annoying (cute....but still a bit annoying). I had Bonsai and Tsunami in cages next to my kitchen. They screamed every time the faucet was turned on, the fridge door was opened, or a plastic bag was rustled. Thank goodness they are all in my bedroom now. They only scream when its breakfast or dinner time or when I talk to them in a certain voice. Just make sure they have plenty of hay and water 24/7 and they'll be alright.

Re: More Food?

They're usually just very good beggars. Do they have hay at all times?

Re: More Food?

How many cups of veggies do you feed? I give mine a good healthy cup of a mixture 2x a day.

Do you feed fresh veggies twice per day? One cup of fresh veggies per pig/twice a day is what you should be feeding.

Print off this diet chart to use on a daily basis: Diet/Nutrition Chart. It shows what veggies to feed daily along with what veggies to supplement with 1-2 times, and 3-4 times per week. Your pigs should be getting a combination of leaf lettuce (red, green, butter, romaine, etc., not iceburg) twice a day. In addition to other veggies on the list (rotating during the week). Mark a calendar to keep track of what you have fed on what days (according to what the chart states).

I could never consider my piggies' wheeking "annoying". I'm sorry, but when they wheek...I pay attention to what the reason might be. Are they hungry and need fed more?...Are they lonely/scared/want attention and reassurance?...Are they just spoiled rotten and want a corn husk treat?...etc.

When ours wheek, and I jump up and run to them to see what they want, my husband picks on me (and them) by saying, "go ahead...jump at their demands and be their slave!!" (He does too!).

That's just because they don't wheek that much between meals because they are well fed. So when they do...I know there is some other reason and look into it.

Question Re: More Food?

I thought you were supposed to feed 1/2 cup 2x day per pig, to equal 3 cups total at the end of the day.

Its really supposed to be 1 whole cup per pig 2x day? So that would be 6 cups total a day, correct?

P.S: I have 3 piggies.

Please let me know!

Re: More Food?

The minimum is 1 cup of veggies per pig per day but you can feed more.
