Question My Guinea Pig Is Huge

I Adopted My Guinea Pig About A Month Ago, And She Was Huge When I Got Her... She Will Eat Up All Of Her Hay No Matter How Much I Give Her!!! Seems She Doesn't Touch Her Pellets Much Either! I Also Give Her One Baby Carrot A Day And A Piece Of Romaine Lettuce A Day. What Can I Do To Get Her To Normal Size Again, I Have Already Gone Through 4 Packages Of Timothy Hay Since I Have Brought Her Home! She Will Not Play On The Floor Either, She Just Sits There! Please Help.

Re: My Guinea Pig Is Huge

How long have you had her? How old is she? How much does she weigh? Where did you get her?

Guinea pigs should have unlimited timothy hay at all times. It is possible she didn't get much (if any) hay in her last home and is gobbling it down because she has overgrown teeth. Or.. maybe she just likes hay!

She should be getting more veggies than this. The minimum is one cup per pig per day. The one baby carrot is fine.. no more than that. Try adding more lettuces (anything but iceburg), bell pepper, cilantro, and tomato.

Re: My Guinea Pig Is Huge

She may not be huge. It may be just because you have never had a guinea pig before. You need to get another guinea pig to house with her. It will make her happier, also during floor time she probably is just scared. Since you just got her she is probably too skittish to want to be out in the open. Also, a friend could help with that.

Do you have a picture of her? Some pigs are just big I have an aby that weighs 3ibs 8oz and he isn't really fat, he is just a big boy. Is it possible she is pregnant?

Re: My Guinea Pig Is Huge

Pregnancy lasts anywhere from 59-72 days or on average around 10 weeks.

I fixed your image link so it now shows up when you click it, but the photo is small and hard to see. You don't have to use the url or img tags. Just copy/paste the link to your photo in the thread.

Re: My Guinea Pig Is Huge

It could be that she is pregnant, so have a vet check her in the next week or so (or as soon as possible), to check her over in general and for pregnancy.
So she does not gobble her hay down so fast, have obstacles for her to get to hay. Try paper towel rolls and stuff them with hay. (Cut a slit down the middle though) Like a Kong! My guinea pig pushes it around and has a blast!
