It's been about a month now since I have adopted my two girls. Their cage is located in the corner of our family room. It's been about a week or so that I have been noticing that the smell of hay is starting to over power our family room. My allergies (which never had)are getting worse, and I'm pretty sure it's the hay. Once I leave the room, or when I am at work during the day I am fine. I am using Oxbow Timothy Hay. We have always used the air purifier in this busy room and I am constantly cleaning the filters. Since I am the one that feeds them, spot cleans.. and so on... what do you recomend? I read that orchard grass is great for allergies... Any suggestions would be great! P.S. I have the hay in bent grids attached to the inside of the cage. Thanks!!!

Re: Hay & Allergies If you ordered 40lbs of hay and keep it in the house i'd move it to the garage or basement so it's not near you. Keep hay in their cage but only as much as they can eat in a day that way it will be much easier on you and the air purifier! I keep mine in the fruit room down the basement.

Re: Hay & Allergies I recommend KM's bluegrass the next time you need hay. It seems to be easier on those that suffer allergies. You can order it through her website- Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home.

Re: Hay & Allergies Ya, I've heard that the bluegrass is easier on allergy sufferers, I didn't notice a difference but when I had got the KMs bluegrass it wasn't when my allergies were bad. I'd reccomend a high quality air filter to put near the cage. I have one and it helps me alot!

Re: Hay & Allergies We keep the hay in the garage, and I have the air filter somewhat close to the cage. I guess I should put it closer to them. I'll try KM bluegrass. Is Oxbow orchard grass the same as bluegrass? Thanks!

Re: Hay & Allergies Sorry to hear you're developing allergies. KM's bluegrass is a special blend. It's different than regular orchard. Some people with allergies do better with it. If you email KM she can probably send you a sample. I think she still does that. I find the tiny pet store bags more dustier especially at the bottom. That may not be helping. I hear that some purifiers (HEPA?) are better than others. Last edited by rabbitsncavyluv : 03-27-08 at 10:55 pm.
