Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

I feed Cavy Cuisine for my 6 boars (all a year to a year and a half old). I recently got three ladies that are younger so I got a back of Cavy Performance (the alfalfa based pellet from Oxbow) and since I was giving the girls the Performance I put a small bit of it in with the boys' Cavy Cuisine dishes and they LOVE it. Is it okay to mix just a bit in the older pigs' food while I have it? Or not?

You can put a bit in there from time to time.

Re: Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

I have one 9 month old and one 6 week old boar living happily together. I had been feeding Cavy Cuisine since the 9 month old turned 6 months, but now with the baby I bought a 5 lb bag of Cavy Performance. How often would you suggest I use the Cavy Performance since both pigs are eating whatever I put in? I've been mixing half Cuisine and half Performance 2 or 3 times a week into their dish. Is that going to cause my 9 month old any problems?

Re: Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

The alfalfa pellets are very high in calcium which could cause sludge/stones in older pigs. That's why most people cut them off at 6 months and give very small amounts on occasion as a supplement.

I never fed my pigs alfalfa hay or pellets and I got them at 6 weeks old. I just gave them a few sprigs of parsley every day. Now that they're 5 months, they only get parsley as suggested on the charts.

I would be very careful about how much you put in though. As you probably already know, Alfalfa has been known for causing stones. I would not put in alot often.

Re: Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

Would Cavy Performance once a week mixed 50/50 with Cavy Cuisine be OK?

Re: Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

I would probably do 50/50 once a month or less.

The less Alfalfa in their diet, the better. Unless your vet says to, feed it sparingly.

Why are you wanting to mix in cavy performance? If all your pigs are older (over a year old) you don't need it at all.

Vets don't always give proper diet advice.

Re: Cavy Performance for Older Pigs?

LY: Peanut is 9 months old but Brownie is only 2 months old, so I wanted to provide some Cavy Performance for Brownie.
