The boyfriend won't be happy....

He told me I couldn't order from Oxbow/KM's because it's too expensive... so I did it anyway, just now. :-D

He'll get over it. He always does. Hahaha.

Since my piggies have never eaten KM's I decided to get a 10 lb. bag of pellets and a 5 lb. bag of 1/2 bluegrass 1/2 timothy hay to start with, just to be sure they like it before I splurge big time.

Just wondering... I chose 1/2 timothy 1/2 bluegrass because I've heard several people say their piggies love the softness of the bluegrass. Any opinions? Should bluegrass be fed any less often than timothy?

Ha Ha.

The bluegrass can be fed just as much as the timothy.

My pigs really liked the timothy/bluegrass mix when we got it.

Re: The boyfriend won't be happy....

I just got my second order of hay from KM! This time I ordered 1/2 third cut timothy and 1/2 bluegrass. My piggies love it! I just give them half of each and let them have plenty of it! They LOVED the bluegrass! My four girls spent about 3 hours in the hay. They romped through it, slept in it, and ate it for 3 straight hours.

My order was 25 pounds of 1/2 bluegrass-1/2 third cut! It looks like so much, but last time I ordered about 9 pounds and they went through it so fast. They can't get enough of it!

Good luck! I hope your piggies love it as much as mine do!

KM's hay is THE BEST. There seems to be less waste due to coarse stems. My boys love it and it smells sooo sweet. It also has spent less time on "the shelf" and has not been processed in any way. Even if it takes you a few months to go through the order, it still is fresher and therefore more nutritious.

Re: The boyfriend won't be happy....

boyfriends are always in the way, aren't they.. I live with my parents for now in a tiny little room and recently I've decided to provide my only cavy with a 2x4 C&C cage. Needless to say, I have very little space left to walk on. I constantly have to keep moving my bed just to get to the closet. My piggy is very happy though. But since I'm planning to move in with my boyfriend in the next little while, he keeps telling me he'll shrink the cage since he doesn't wanna bump into it because we'll live in a bachelor suite most likely. Of course, I'm fighting him on it as much as I can. I want a second piggy for my girl but neither my parents nor my boyfriend support it Maybe when we move in, I'll take one from a rescue shelter and tell him that I needed to save that piggy because otherwise.. well, you know. But yes, I understand how boyfriends can be sometimes Mine doesn't like guinea pigs, so it's even worse

Re: The boyfriend won't be happy....

With my husband I have to do first then tell him later. My boys love the 1/2 and 1/2 bluegrass timothy hay combo. When I put it in the cage they run to it and 2 of them jump in the hay box. When I got our 2nd pig I didn't warn him. My husband looked at the cage and saw there was a different pig and did a double take, I just looked at him and said Happy Father's Day! He was not amused. Good thing I'm the boss around here, we're up to 6 piggies.

LOL...that is so funny!!

Our pigs love KM's bluegrass. They love the third-cut timothy even more! I'm hoping the bluegrass/timothy will be available in a couple of weeks when I need to re-order. Even though the shipping here to Ohio is astronomical, we don't even consider any other kind of hay anymore. As Toadies said...there's less waste, so it's more economical for us even though we have to pay more.

wiggly_narco...just tell your boyfriend that the food he normally eats is too expensive so he'll have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches everyday from now on! When he protests, tell him that that's how it is with piggy diets too. They need a variety of good, healthy food even though some may be a little more costly than others (just like our people meals). Maybe he'll see the logic in that (or maybe not...he may just tell me to shut up !).

I feel very lucky, my fiance loves our boys. When the rescue we got my one boy (Doc) from made a mistake and nearly screwed us over, he fought for our pig tooth and nail. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have Doc. He loves to cuddle them and pet them, he even helps take care of them.

Re: The boyfriend won't be happy....

I feel lucky, my boyfriend loves my guinea pigs, too. He says he likes how happy they make me.

Now I am thinking about giving the KM hay a whirl! I have always fed Oxbow, but lately I have been hearing so many better things about KM hay. However... my pigs don't seem to mind the hard stems. They eat it all. I was looking at the difference between the different cuts, and it actually said the first cut is more nutritious but I guess most pigs don't like crunching the stems. Also, 3rd cut said almost no seedheads (I call them flowers) and that's Piglet's favorite part! Is this weird? Any time I give him a new pile of hay, he pushes his nose through it and picks out all the flowers first. Then he eats the rest. What do you guys think? Should I try first cut? Or is second cut better for other reasons? It says 3rd cut is out for now, but actually I have like 15 pounds of oxbow left yet so I have some time to figure it out.

Re: The boyfriend won't be happy....

My pigs are so weird. One of them adores the 3rd cut, the others won't touch anything but American Pet Diner hay. The chins love the bluegrass hay from KM, but won't touch the APD stuff.

Freaks!
