"Pet Grass"

One of my local pet stores sells seeds for something called "pet grass" that according to the label is good for kitties, guinea pigs, and other small herbivores. Does anyone know anything about this product and whether or not it would be good for piggies?

It looks like a kind of rye grass in the picture.

Sounds like it is wheatgrass. I get the seeds at my local Whole Foods in the bulk section. I think they call it winter wheatberry or something like that. I got a whole pound for under a dollar and it grew a lot of grass.

If you don't have a Whole Foods up there try other stores that tend to sell mostly organic stock.

It does sound like wheatgrass and it's a nice treat for your pigs.

TX- the one thing I miss about living in Austin is the Whole Foods. The other thing I miss is BW3 down on 6th Street.

Is winter wheatberry nutritious? Can you substitute hay with it?

You should never substitute anything for hay. Hay aids in digestion and wears down the molars in a way that fresh grasses don't. You can give it in addition. If it's wheatgrass, it can be fed.

I just got 2 containers of that stuff. My cats like it also. The only problem with the cats eating is that they barf after they eat it!

I would love to be able to let Cookie outside, but we always put down weed killer early in the spring so it's not safe.

That's true. I have been putting Honey outside recently but my dad bought weed killer so i'll have to wait a while

There is a seller on ebay that sells organic wheatgrass seeds very cheap. She ships really fast too.

The "pet grass" is growing nicely. Little tiny shoots peeking up above teh soil. I can't wait until there's enough to feed. I've got 2 kitties too, so we'll have to share nicely.

I have looked at the pet grass as well. I have to go to the store for more veggies and hay today, guess this will go on the list as well.

I picked up some "Pet Grass" at my local Whole Foods, and in my case it says in small print that it is wheat grass. The piggies seem to adore it as a treat, so I will probably start growing them some different grasses--it's nearly impossible to forage in my city. There's just too much a risk for contamination.

The grass i bought the other day is growing great! In another day or so I will be able to cut it and feed it to the pigs Hopefully they'll like it

Do you have to cut it? I've given the whole thing, container and all, to my pigs last year, and they mostly just mowed it down shorter and shorter. Although sometimes they'd yank the roots out...I'm assuming letting them eat those roots is bad.

I used to buy pet grass kits and little containers of fresh grass but they're such a ripoff. You can buy tons of seed for the price of one of those. Coir and perlite are pretty cheap. I agree with buying plain wheatgrass seeds. It's so worth it if you want to give them more than a tiny bit

is there any difference between winter wheatberry grass and hard red wheatgrass? I live in Vancouver and so far, I only found red wheatgrass here.

I bought the wheat grass seeds too. I use three level seed sprouter to grow them. I usually serve it in a week, when the grass is about 2 inches long. Pigs like them a lot. They eat everything, sprout, seed, and roots.
