Which food???? please help!

Hey! My friend told me about a new guinea pig food that is really good for guinea pigs and that i should start using it. I usually use a pet store food called Fiesta and she has eaten that all her life. She is 5 years old so i dont think its bad for her. But i heard from people on this site that pet store food is bad. I confused. should i switch to the "good food" or stick with the Fiesta. I worried that if i start using a different food it might disturb her and she will be like, "hey what is this?" and stop eating.

Re: Which food???? please help!

Kaytee Fiesta is total and complete garbage. It has seeds, nuts and other crap in it that pigs don't need, they cause obesity and choking hazards. Kaytee also has potentially cancer causing preservatives in it and many other ingredients pig do not need. Most petstores pellet brands are bad because they contain unneeded and harmful ingredients.

She's not too old to change brands. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine and KM's pellets are the best on the market.

Re: Which food???? please help!

I fed my guinea pigs Hartz and other brands for over a decade until I was told about Oxbow and KM's pellets and hay. I made the switch and I've found major, postive differences in the coat and my pigs' activity since I've switched.

If you do plan on purchasing a higher quality food, for the first month you can mix the old food with the new food little by little. Soon enough they will never had known the difference. I switched cold turkey and I saw no problems.

I do suggest you try Oxbow or Kleenmama's since they are well made and directed toward cavys.

Oxbow is a very good food. KM is another very good food! Both are free of cancer causing chemicals, seeds, nuts, etc. I think it has already been said that all of these things are very dangerous to your piggies!

Re: Which food???? please help!

There are so many foods out there I cannot even begin to tell you what are good and what are not so good. Health-wise that is.

Foods to stay away from-
- Kaytee
- Hartz
-Any off brand or petstore brand (You may not know what is in it)
- Sunseed ( I am not sure about that barnd though)

Try these-
- Mazurri 5564
- Oxbow
- KM's
- Sweet Meadow (POssibly has pellets) But probably only available to New England or surrounding areas.

But the order from best to worst on this list would be

KM's- Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home
Oxbow- Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome
Mazuri 5664- Mazuri Home (only comes in alfalfa based)
