Question How to get piggie to eat his veggies

We just got a new piggie on Saturday. I've read a ton about nutrition and have a few types of lettuces, parsley, baby carrots, cucumber, green pepper, tomato, & apples on hand. We were kind of excited to feed him his "salad" yesterday but quite frankly, the morning one he only ate a bit of the Romaine... the evening one he only tasted the parsley.

I'm wondering if it would be better to introduce one thing a day?
Or to give him his salad items during lap/floor time for now so he gets used to them?

All he seems to want to really eat is his Timothy hay and a bit of pellets.

Suggestions. Please be gentle, we're brand new and DO want to do the right thing.

Re: How to get piggie to eat his veggies

I had the same thing happen to me when we got our piggy. She really didn't want to eat much of the salad. It could be that your piggy didn't like what you gave him . I've found out that Cookie doesn't like peppers, tomatoes or cucumbers and that was in the first salads I was giving her.

Just keep trying. In a few days he will realize that the salads are really good and he'll eat. He's also probably trying to adjust to his new home. Before you know it he'll look at you as his new family.

Good luck.

Re: How to get piggie to eat his veggies

It's best to start with one or two veggies like lettuces and bell pepper and then add a new veggie in about every 3 days or so. Starting with so much when the pig isn't used to is overwhelming them. Also have a lot of patience and persistance. If your piggie has never had veggies it will take time, in some cases, weeks to get him to eat many things.

Thumbs up Re: How to get piggie to eat his veggies

OOps.. I should have stated that we bought those veggies yesterday because *WE* eat them (and needed a resupply) not because we were feeding them all to Theo at once.

However, I'm happy to report that though he didn't hardly touch this morning's leaf of Romaine he went bonkers over this evening's piece of green pepper! He gobbled it up in between gobbles of hay and glugs of water. He loved it so much we was wheeking with delight as he stood on the edge of the feeding dish.

Crazy guy!

Anyway, thank you for the advice! Patience is on the menu....
