Question Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

Hey guys,
I've personally had guinea pigs ever since childhood and back in Russia, we never really worried about an incomplete diet so naturally, our guinea pigs ate the veggies we gave them and the hay we collected for them. We've never had to give them vitamin C. Correction: we never did. So I was wondering where do people get those tablets everybody keeps talking about and how much are they?

Oxbow Pet Products

You definetely want those, At least your piggies do! Ginger, Opal, and Noel LOVE those things, they take them right from my fingers, and put the whole thing in their mouths and grind away, . They think they're getting a treat every day!

Good luck!

What if they don't sell Oxbow in Canada?

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy anything online Sorry that I didn't clarify that earlier. So I guess human vitamin C wouldn't do it, will it?

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

Oh yes, it will. The Oxbow kind just might be more palatable, thats all.

Get a 100mg human vit.C tablet with very little to no sugar added. Split the tablets in half, than in half again, so you have 1/4's of a tablet (25mg) to give to your cavies daily. Make sure all the tablets contain is Vitamin C, no other supplements!

Even if you also feed vitamin c rich veggies, a little excess vitamin C will be peed out.

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

You do not need vitamin tablets! You can give your piggies all the vitamins they need by feeding them veggies such as romaine lettuce, bell peppers, cilantro, tomatoes, carrots(one baby carrot at most per day), spring greens, etc.

Piggies get all the vitamins they need from a good pellet food and at least one cup of a good mix of veggies per day! And don't forget unlimited grass hay everyday!!!!

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

She's right, I just like to make sure they get vit c each day, in case I can't feed them their veggies for whatever reason.

Good to have for emergencies, I guess.

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

My cavy doesn't seem to like neither the bell peppers nor the tomatoes, so I'm seriously considering vitamin C supplements. I had the multi-vitamin that you add into water but after reading that it's useless, I gave up on it.

How many times have you offered bell peppers?

I had to offer them a lot before my piggies finally started to eat them. Someone on here said to rub the peppers on the lettuce to get them use to the taste of them. Try to keep offering the peppers, and give then a slice of orange twice a week until they begin to eat the peppers, that way they will be getting some vitamin C.

You can use the human vitamin C tablets from the pharmacy, but you have to make sure you get the ones WITHOUT sugar. And, I would crush them up and sprinkle it on their food! I would do this as a last resort! I would keep trying the veggies though!

Re: Vitamin C tablets: Where to buy it?

There is vitamin C in all veggies. Some veggies just contain more than others. If you are feeding the minimum of 1 cup of veggies per pig per day and supplying unlimited grass hay and a top quality pellet, you don't need the C tablets.

I would recommend cilantro for your piggies, my boys love it. Also parsley is a great choice, but just don't feed parsley daily.
