Bagels

Hi everyone!

I'm working on making my pigs some homemade treats in an effort to get away from buying treats from stores, and although I've come up with one recipe they like, it's still only one and I need more! So I came up with an idea for bagels, are they safe for pigs? They'll probably be oven baked. I've been trying to do some research to find out if they're okay or not but so far have come up short. Thanks for any info!

Also if you have suggestions on more recipes please let me know!

Re: Bagels

The only treat your piggies should have is grass hay, plain timothy pellets, and lots and lots of veggies!

No breads and grains are not good for them. I am not sure of the other treat you have made but if it is not made of veggies or hay then I wouldn't give it to them!

I agree. If you want to feed treats, find out your pigs favorite veggie. Treats, even homeade, are not good! Stick to FRESH veggies, and hay.

Re: Bagels

Ya, no bread, grains, seeds, meat, sweets, petstore treats, dairy anything, and the list goes on. The only things they should have is hay, plain timothy based pellets, veggies, and a small amounts of fruit. Also no cooked or frozen veggies or fruits either.

What is the recipe you came up with?

Re: Bagels

Their food with some banana or other fruit mixed in is the other treat I made.

Why are frozen fruits bad? I give them some once a week just like I would with any other fruit. And yes they get veggies every day, I make them a nice little salad

Re: Bagels

Frozen fruits are bad because freezing makes things lose vitamin content.

Re: Bagels

Bananas are "iffy" with GPs. They can cause digestive-type problems. I would severely limit the amount of banana you give your GPs.

Re: Bagels

I had tried to make a homemade baked treat for my piggies. Let's just say the dogs would not even eat it. Then I found out on this website that baked goods are not good for the piggies. You know the recipes bad when the piggies won't eat it!

If that were the only issue, though, it wouldn't be "bad" to feed frozen foods, but rather would just not be as good as feeding fresh foods. If you were feeding only frozen foods, then they wouldn't get the nutrients they needed, but a few frozen items in an otherwise well-rounded diet would be ok.

But... the more important reason not to give frozen foods (that I learned right here on this forum from VooDooJoint and others) is that freezing kills enzymes in the food that are essential to digesting the food properly.
