Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

Peanut does not like lettuce at all. He always seems to go towards the fruit more. He loves carrots, but they can only be fed one per pig per day. What should I do??

Use the nturition charts that Ly&Pigs put up to give you some more ideas.

Maybe bell pepper would work.

Is it Romaine Lettuce?

Yeah, romaine lettuce. My mom doesn't buy anything else.

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

I am trying to think of a healthy substitute for lettuce. Nutritionally, I think that not eating lettuce is fine as long as the nutrients are replaced somewhere else in the diet. Maybe a vitamin C suppliment would do the trick?

You should never replace veggies with a C supplement. They need the veggies. If you are going to nutritionally replace it, then it needs to be with another veggie.

Seeing as lettuce is pretty much the main staple in a pigs diet though, you should try other varieties. Maybe you could ask your mom to buy some red or green leaf lettuce or some spring mix to try?

What do you feed Peanut on a daily basis as far as veggies? Please list everything.

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

Try feeding the romaine or other lettuce plain no other veggies. Then once that is gone giving them the other more tasty veggies.

Mix some cilantro in to the lettuce. My piggies go crazy for cilantro!

Maybe try serving it cut up differently. If you give it to them whole/big then cut it up smaller. Or, if you cut it up small, then leave it in bigger pieces. Maybe it is just a size of lettuce issue?

Just thinking out loud!!! Can't think of anything else!

Good luck!

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

My pigs like red/green lettuce. They also really like cilantro. Parsley is great too, but only a few times a week.

Peanut may need some quiet time alone with his lettuce and other leafy greens.

The nutritional charts are here:

You might have some luck with mixing in grasses and other forages if they are available in your area, and clean:

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

I fed this yesterday:

A bit of green bell pepper
A large piece of romaine lettuce(barely touched)
A orange slice
A baby carrot
A piece of broccoli
A very small piece of pineapple
And a few pieces of cucumber

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

Try as a couple others have suggested. Give him the romaine first with nothing else and leave it in the cage until it gets all wilted. If he eats it, he can then have other goodies. If he doesn't eat the lettuce after a couple hours, he can have other veggies.

When you say "a bit of" green pepper, how much is that exactly? They can have about 1/8 of a pepper daily, in fact they need it because it contains high levels of C.

I hope you aren't giving fruits daily or broccoli and cucumber daily.

Maybe try some Endive or Cilantro. My pigs love them both.

Re: Absolutely Hates Lettuce! What to do?

My boys favorites are cilantro and parsley. Also I highly recommend red and green leaf lettuce. Butter lettuce is another lettuce my boys like.

Thanks for the advice! That is about right of how much pepper I feed. I know not to feed those daily. That would not be good!
