Can I freeze my Hay??

Hi everyone! I wanted to buy some hay, but I don't know how much my piggie can eat before the hay becomes stale. When does hay get stale, if at all? Also, can I freeze my hay so that it will stay fresher longer, then unfreeze it when my piggie is ready to eat it? It would be nice if I could just buy a big batch, then save it so i don't have to keep making trips to the store. It's alfalfa hay, just an FYI. Thanks!

Re: Can I freeze my Hay??

You definately never want to freeze hay. Hay, stored properly will last for a good year. Just store it in either a cardboard box with holes poked in it for air circulation or an open topped rubbermaid like container (do not use lid). Then store it in a dry location.

And, by the way, why aren't you giving your pigs grass hay instead of alfalfa? They need grass hay in unlimited amounts. Alfalfa is only a supplemental hay for young, pregnant or nursing pigs.

Re: Can I freeze my Hay??

My piggie is a baby, she is only about 1-2 months old. I know that cavy's older than 6 months need timothy/grass hay.
So if I just kept it in the bag it would save? Thanks

Re: Can I freeze my Hay??

Even though your pig is under 6 months it still needs unlimited grass hay, such as timothy, as well as alfalfa. Alfalfa is just a supplemental hay. All piggies regardless of age need to have unlimited grass hay!

If you have a large amount of hay you do not want to keep it in the bag! You should find a box or rubbermaid container to keep it in. The air flow is what keeps it dry/fresh. If it is stored in a bag it will get moist and mold. That is very dangerous for the piggies!

Absolutely. From the day they are born they need grass hay. They can have afalfa in addition as a supplement.

You don't want to store hay in a bag, especially plastic. It could mold. I explained the two methods for properly storing hay.
