Lightbulb I'm searching for the most palatable, safe, appropriate level of vit.C leafy green...

I would feed it daily, so it can't have an issue with calcium or oxalates.

I used to, before I understood about calcium and oxalic acid in veggies, feed my one guinea pig Ginger fresh raw parsley every day. And probably a good size amount. It was fed once a day.

I've stopped doing that now, but is there anything I can do to flush toxic levels of calcium and oxalates out of her? It hasn't caused any problems so far, and she actaully hasn't had parsley in a long time. I feel kind of bad for her, because she doesn't seem to care too much for the salad greens(Earthbound Farms Organic blend, no iceburg, just romaine and some other baby lettuces), and she's the one who eats all the fresh veggies before the other ones can get enough.

Are mustard greens ok? I don't think she likes peppers either. Personally I don't blame her for not liking peppers, but she needs to eat some of those! She eats the most out of my 3, as she is the alpha-dominant cavy who bosses the others.

I wish there was some leafy green that I could feed her daily, that she would devour as readily as she devoured parsley......

The only leafy greens that can be fed daily are lettuces and cilantro. Everything else is either high in calcium, A or oxalic acid. Have you tried cilantro?

Mustard greens can be fed but about every 3 days.

I bet she would like Cilantro! It really looks like the flat leaf Italian parsley, so maybe she'll think thats what it is!

Thanks a bunch! And how much/how often would that be per cavy?

You can give several sprigs of cilantro daily.

Mine aren't to big on it. Hank started eating it and then made a face like a small child with a sower skittle in its mouth! I haven't tried it again

Re: I'm searching for the most palatable, safe, appropriate level of vit.C leafy gree

I just purchased the cilantro today, and I also bought a red bell pepper. How much of the red pepper should I feed each of them(I tend to hand feed them on my lap on the couch, ) & how often (like days a week or every day) do I offer it?

Just one more thing, when I feed the spring mix (iceburg free fyi ;P), how much per pig, per day? And should I offer it at 2 times a day?

Thanks a lot everyone!

Have you seen the nutrition charts? That will answer a lot of your "how often can I feed ____" questions. As far as the amounts, you can give a few strips of red bell pepper every other day as it's high in sugars. You can give the spring mix a couple times a day if you want and the amounts can vary. You can give each pig a nice big handful or two per feeding.

But the OP is asking for leafy greens that can be fed daily that contain a good amount of C. Kale cannot be fed on a daily basis as it's high in calcium and vitamin A. At most, Kale is a twice per week food.

Here is the link for the chart that I printed off, and use on a daily basis (along with a calendar to mark down what I have fed on what days): Diet/Nutrition Chart

Don't get snarky please. You gave information yes, but the info you gave wasn't for daily use. I wanted that clarified for other people coming to read this thread. Otherwise they may think it's ok to feed kale daily when it's not. If you look at my title, I am a moderator and trust me, I know my stuff when it comes to diet and nutrition.
