Surprise in hay Yeah before I pulled out a handful of hay from their Kaytee bag (I'm not switching to anything else at the moment, that's not what this subject/question is about, although I will get KMs at some point) -- and there was a fairly large and what seemed like long dead cricket in there. Disssgusting. Well I just want to know, is it okay for them to eat the rest of this hay? Nothing could've been contaminated right? I guess that's actually a pretty stupid question. I saw another thread on here about how someone found a dead mouse in their hay, and I know bugs can happen, but it's a first for me, so I just want to make sure.

Re: Surprise in hay Eww. That happened to me once, and I threw the bag away. The thing is that bag of hay I got was Kaytee too...They now have just the Petco brand hay.

Re: Surprise in hay Well, you've gotta think: there was something dead and decaying in the hay. If there was something dead and decaying in YOUR food, wouldn't you throw it out?

I would throw it out hands down! If you wouldn't eat from that they probably will not be very happy about it either.

Re: Surprise in hay They have the advantage of not knowing about it. If it was dry and just "sitting there" among the hay, I'd probably just toss the cricket and not worry about the hay. If the cricket was moist and decaying, then definitely toss the whole batch!

Re: Surprise in hay I would personally take it back to the shop and ask for your money back, though I would have to want to buy something to make the effort and expense in returning it.

Re: Surprise in hay IMO... It's grass, it comes from the outside where bugs live. In order for it to be safe for a GP to eat they can't spray pestisides on it. So how can you not expect to find bugs in it every once in a while? I would just throw out the cricket and feed them the hay.

Re: Surprise in hay It wouldn't have bothered me in the least, but then I'm an old country gal. I would still feed them the hay (sans cricket). Dutch

| Re: Surprise in hay I wouldnt throw the whole thing away, maybe just any hay that came in direct contact with it. I find moths in my hay sometimes and I just toss them and any hay that I knew was wrapped around it. But of course I buy my hay by the bale so it'd be sorta silly to toss a whole bale (or bag) just becuase of a moth(or cricket) or 2. Last edited by Jenni_Feathers : 02-13-08 at 05:54 pm. | Re: Surprise in hay The thing most people don't realize is that when hay is cut and baled, there aren't people sifting through it in the fields looking to see if there are dead bugs or mice and other impurities in the hay. Sometimes things like this are in the hay. It's rather to be expected. I would just toss the cricket out and continue to use the hay. In the wild, they would just eat around it and go on. |

Re: Surprise in hay I found a cricket in the hay I used to get- From a feed store. I didn't like the hay to begin with and that kinad sealed the deal for me. I threw that bunch away and ordered Km's blue grass. I am completely sticking with that from now on. SOOO much better.

Re: Surprise in hay I would definitely tell the store you got it from, and if there is a phone number for the manufacturer on the bag, I'd call them too. Sometimes if a product has something wrong with it the company will send coupons to compensate you. I would also just throw away the part that was around the cricket and use the rest.

Re: Surprise in hay I found the same thing in a bag of Oxbow hay I recently purchased, a dried up cricket. I just tossed the cricket and the hay around it and kept the rest of the hay. Like someone else said unless it's moist and decaying then the hay should be fine. I wouldn't toss out the whole thing just because of one dried up bug.

Re: Surprise in hay The hay is ok. Just remove the cricket and some of the hay around it and move on. Your pigs will be just fine.
