Is Kaytee Timothy Hay OK? I wasn't sure.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I have found that Timothy hay is Timothy hay as far as ingredients. It is the quality that is the problem. When I used Kaytee, There were never any seedbuds. My pigs love seedbuds. The pieces were also sometimes dry. If you have the opportunity to get to a feed store to get fresh hay that is the best way to go. I bought a bale and have kept it for months in my garage. It is way cheaper to buy in bulk than to get small bags. I spent $20.00 on a bale that may end up lasting me close to 9 months.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I personally don't think the Katee hay is of very good quality at all.

We buy Oxbow Western Timothy. My vet gets it in bulk, so I have them order mine by the 9lb bag. I pay a couple bucks extra to get it through the vet, but it still saves me on shipping.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

Some bags of Kaytee hay are better than others but some aren't. It is suitable to feed but you will find yourself spending alot more money purchasing small bags of hay than buying it in bulk. Just make sure the hay is green and fresh smelling. Don't be afraid to open the bag at the store and smell it.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I used to feed my girls that hay but it was so coarse it seemed like a bunch of skinny sticks. Then I started ordering from Kleenmama's Hayloft since so many people here recommended it. WHAT A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!! It ends up being cheaper than buying the little bags of hay, even when you add in the cost of shipping (I live in Florida and they are located in Washington state, so I have to pay the highest shipping charge because it's across the country, and it's still less expensive). When available, I get the 3rd cut Timothy hay, which is sooo soft. The girls love it, and they also love the 2nd cut. It smells so fragrant and there's no danger of them poking out an eye when they dive face-first into the hay (which they love to do). My girls also love KM's Bluegrass hay.

KM's customer service is great, and they give you a tracking number so you'll know exactly when to expect your delivery. Mine only takes 1 week to go across country, and it is shipped the next day after I place the order. You can order any amount from 5 lbs. on up. I get 10 lbs. at a time which fits perfectly in my indoor storage area. You might consider checking it out ... your piggies will thank you!

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I was really disappointed with Kaytee because I would get a lot of timothy "dust" [that really fine-cut timothy that accumulates at the bottom of the bag which my animals never eat]. I'd have about a half-pound of that leftover once I finished off a 48-oz bag. I usually just stick it in the litterbox for my rabbits, it makes it look nicer but does nothing else.
I order Oxbow hay online, 50 lbs every month [25 of timmy, 25 of orchard grass] and pay so much less for a higher-quality hay.
I also used to get a lot of splinters in my fingers from Kaytee. I've rarely had that problem with Oxbow.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I got a bag of Kaytee, and it was not great. A third of the bag was hard stems. Another third was mostly very short messy leaves. Only a third of the bag was actually useful. It made an enormous mess.

If you have somewhere dry to store it, get a bale of grass hay at a farm store. The type of grass available in your area will usually vary as the season changes.

Bales are cheap, and are mostly all long green leaves. They also have minimal packaging. Just a few wraps of cord to hold it together. You can fit them in the backseat of a 4-door car if you need to.

They also make the garage or shed smell great.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I used to use Kaytee Timothy as well, but I saw the light about 1 1/2 years ago. KM's is THE best. Less waste, higher quality and GREAT customer service. I found that Kaytee was not always available, so I would by 6-8 bags at a time, just so I didn't run out. There was alot of probs with stemy, dry hay. Some of the expiration dates were 2 years away. Can't be much nutrition in something that gets that old. There's just no comparison. If you can do it, go KM. You won't regret it.

Exclamation Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I feed Kaytee Timothy Hay and I am very satisified with it.

It is always green and smells great.

Some may argue that it is not the best thing for your pig, but my pig loves it!

I do agree that the quality depends on the bag, but I have only searched for a bag once or twice.

I do like my Kaytee Timothy hay, and will continue to use it.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

That is your choice auburnmare but if you want to save money, buying in bulk is much cheaper and you can get better quality hay that way as well.

Oh no, a Kaytee proponent!

Just kidding. I can't say it doesn't smell good, and I can't say my pigs didn't eat it like crazy. It is also pretty easy to find. Heck, you can get it at many hardware, and non-pet stores.

Just curious, have you tried any other hay products? I'm too cheap to buy the fancy ones, but bales (if you can handle them) are very economical.

I have used another type of hay, but I cannot remember exactly what it was. My pig ate it, but he did not dive into it and it did not smell very "hay-ish."

I work with horses so I will get 1.5-3.5 flakes of hay over the summer and that will probably last a month or so.

I would never buy a bale because I would probably have it for quite a while!

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I just went from Kaytee to KM. My piggies liked to climb in the Kaytee hay and eat it. They were happy with it. When I put the fresh KM hay in they dove in and bounced around in it. I was wondering if it was mixed with Piggie nip or something. LOL They absolutely LOVE the KM hay. I have a 1x3 hay room for them to romp and play in, and of course eat. The three babies will play so hard in the hay that they end up falling asleep in it.

The KM is just fresher, softer, better smelling, and cheaper! You don't have to buy it, but I can't think of any reason to go back to petstore stale hay in indated bags.

Re: Kaytee Timothy Hay?

I think it works very well! My pigs love their Kaytee brand hay just as much as they love their veggies and its so easy to find which is very nice. Also, I dont have a heck of a lot of extra storage space so the smaller bags work well. I have heard that buying a huge bale is cheaper but I wouldnt know where to store it and I couldnt even find it. As far as quality, I just check the dates on the bag and pick up the softest, greenest bag.
