Whoops, Ran out of Oxbow!!!

OI!!!

I'm so stupid, I thought I had another bag of Oxbow in my freezer for the piggers but I don't. They are all out!!! I don't have a local supplier so I order it. My pigs were hungry this morning so I went to the freezer and realized my mistake.

SO, my only option was to trek on over to PetSmart. I really don't want to give them any garbage but they need SOME pellet, right? So, I did my best. I went through all the bags... and looked at ingredients. I'm not entirely savvy on what makes a good pellet so, your help is needed.

I went with the Kaytee brand Timothy Complete Guinea Pig...

Here are the ingredients... I looked for one without corn and without any nuts, seeds, ect. Now, I understand this is junk compared to the Oxbow. i totally screwed up! But it will take a few weeks for my Oxbow to get here, so I'm doing the best I can. Let me know if ya'll think they will be ok on this for now, or if I should forego the pellet and give extra veggies and hay.

Ingredients
Sun-cured Timothy Grass Hay, Wheat Middlings, Ground Wheat, Oat Hulls, Dehulled Soybean Meal, Sun-cured Alfalfa Meal, Dried Cane Molasses, Salt, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), DL-Methionine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin A Supplement, Choline Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement, Manganous Oxide, Zinc Oxide, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ethoxyquin (a preservative), Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of vitamin K activity), Copper Sulfate, Cholecalciferol (source of vitamin D3), Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Biotin, Folic Acid, Calcium Iodate, Dried A. oryzae Fermentation Extract (source of protease), Dried Bacillus coagulans Fermentation Product, Dried Bacillus licheniformis Fermentation Product, Dried Bacillus subtilis Fermentation Product, Cobalt Carbonate, Sodium Selenite.

This brand is complete garbage. If you had read around the forum, you would have known this. You can feed it during the interim between now and when you get a new order of Oxbow in but no longer than that.

Ly -

Thank you for answering, although I did not entirely appreciate the tone you answered with.

I was under the impression that the "version" of the feed was new, or so the label said. I had not seen it in the store before ( maybe the bag was just changed? ) but I figured it was new and it had not been posted on before.

I didn't expect it to be "high quality" by any means, I was just looking for the best I could get in the meantime. I was totally aware that it is not a good food ( I feed Oxbow!!!) but my mistake lead to me needing a quick fix. I don't like supporting PetSmart, but I'd rather do that than let my pigs starve.

So, thank you for the response. I simply wanted to know if it was alright for the time being, until be shipment arrives. But, the "snappiness" of the reply wasn't warranted. I very much respect you and think extremely highly of you. I understand that "newbies" ask lots of questions which you have to answer over and over again. But, I HAVE been here for 6 months or so now, and quite know my way around the forum. If I thought I could find the answer by searching, I would have.

You perceived me being snappy or having a "tone" although I was not. Even members who have been around a while know the best way to find info like this is to do a search.

Re: Whoops, Ran out of Oxbow!!!

Ok, then I apologize for reading into your post. Many times snappy responses are given on this forum ( not you persay, just in general) and I would simply suggest that the "you would have know" or "you should have known better" kind of comments be limited. It comes off as abrupt most times, even if that was not the intention ( which is very hard to tell over the internet). So, I appologize and again I very much respect your opinion and value your advice.

Good news, I'm going to volunteer with APPR ( Arizona Piggie Poo Rescue ) tomorrow at an adoption event, and I will be able to purchase Oxbow for my pigs. So crisis averted. I was just contacted about the event and realized they sell it !!

Thanks for your help, I'll return the "yuck" food in the AM.
