Question Wheat Grass

My dad has been eating a lot of organic and healthy foods lately and he read somwhere that growing and the juicing wheat grass is very good for you. Well, there are tubs of this grass all over my house. Two in the bathroom, four in the front window, etc. I was wondering if it's okay to feed my guinea pigs this wheat grass every once and a while?

Re: Wheat Grass

Yes, feed it to them. They will love it! Your dad will not be happy. They can tear through it pretty quickly. Fortunately, it grows back. Many types of grass can be fed to guinea pigs. I've read that fescue can be a problem because there is a mold that sometimes grows inside of it which cannot be seen. Other grasses are nothing to worry about. I've been researching this lately. Some grasses get mold on the outside, so check for abnormal colors in the grass before feeding it to them.

Good grasses besides timothy and orchard:
bluegrass (like Kentucky)
ryegrass
wheatgrass
oat grass.
bermuda grass
crab grass (weed)

There are some others as well. These are the most common in my area. I'm not sure how much is too much. I'm guessing it is like other veggies, meaning you don't want them to eat so much that they get diarrhea from all the extra moisture.

I think you need to be sure that the seed is separated from the grass before you feed it. (We usually grow it in a sprouter, so the seed stays attached)
