Hartz Timothy Hay?

This stuff is junk. Last week I ordered Timothy Hay from American Pet Diner... unfortunately that didn't last very long (they loved it) so the closest place to me to get hay is at shoprite, next is Petco.

They gobbled up the American Pet Diner hay all right, but this Hartz garbage, while still kind of green, is really hard/dry... they're not really touching it. Problem is, I remember this becoming an issue a few weeks ago with the Petco hay also. They were eating it, then I picked up Alfalfa hay from Petco, they didn't touch it, and when I went back to the Petco Timothy Hay they then didn't touch that. SIGH.

I can't be ordering hay all the time online, it's just not realistic - it ends up becoming super expensive with the s&h -- and I'm broke at the moment so won't be able to pick up new hay for them until Saturday (from Petco, blech)... I'm going to continue giving them this Hartz hay until them, just so they have something in there with their alfalfa pellets (oxbow) --- they're also munching away on their veggies of course --- I'm just hoping they become re-interested in the hay at Petco for the time being.

Next paycheck I get I'm going to order them KMs alfalfa/timothy mix, but like I said, can't do it all the time.

They should be okay until Saturday? I know they need unlimited hay but...there's nothing else I can really do at the moment.

Do see them eating some of this Hartz hay, but not too much.

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

If you order from KM in larger shipments, then the hay would most likely last a bit longer and you would only have to order every 2-3 months. It would be cheaper in the long run even though it seems more expensive, it really isn't. Compare what you would spend on the little bags of hay and then what you would spend on a 25 or 35lb. box of hay from KM with shipping. You will actually pay less per pound.

All Hartz products are pure garbage. But keep offering them the hay just so they will have some until you can get better stuff.

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

If ordering online is unrealistic for you, as it is for some people, call a local agriculture/farm supply store.

I just bought 75 lbs of orchard grass hay for $7.50. Storage is a bit of a problem, but I have enough hay for quite a while for much, much less money that my other options gave me.

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

Yeah, it really does make more sense to just order it from KMs since I can get 25-35 pounds. It seems like a lot of money now, but if that lasts 2-3 months (does it really?) then I'll obviously be saving money.

She said something about taking it out of the plastic... where in the world do you store it then to keep it lasting long? There's really nowhere I CAN put it other than keeping it in the bag it came in.

I was thinking of getting the 25 pound of Timothy/Alfalfa. That should really last at least a month?

I ordered 25 pounds of hay from KM, half bluegrass, half timothy, about 2 months ago. Looking at the hay, it seems as though I haven't even put a dent in it, even though I give them a big mound each day! It really does last a very long time and is SO much more economical than buying the smaller bags. You should definitely take the hay out of the bag it comes in (which I think is just a big garbage bag) and what you can do is just place it back into the shipping box it comes in. However, I bought a big, 40 gallon (I believe) plastic storage bin to keep it in just because it looks a little nicer.

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

I just posted this on another thread. Have a read about how to store KM's hay in it's original box. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/346055-post4.html.

You can also get large rubbermaid/sterlite containers and store hay in it as well but you have to leave the lid off. I have two large ones that I store hay in from the local feedstore. I normally buy burmuda by the bale and I can fit half a bale into one of my containers and the other half into the other container. I leave the lids off and the hay stays fresh (although the top of the 2nd bale will turn a bit brown from air exposure by the time I'm ready to use it).

I know that when I bought hay from KM, I had gotten 45lbs. of bluegrass and 55lbs. of 3rd cut timothy. That and half a bale I had from the feedstore lasted 7 pigs for a year.

Which is best, 1rst cut, 2nd cut, or 3rd cut?

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

3rd cut is the softest and less weed free. If 3rd cut is out of stock then go for 2nd cut.

Re: Hartz Timothy Hay?

Okay, I just looked at KM's website and they have 25 lbs. 3rd cut timothy hay for $15.00, so I think thats what I'll get, that and the 10 lb bag of timothy choice pellets. It's cheaper for both hay and pellets, at KM's than Oxbow.
