Re: Hay....how long does it last?

I am not sure how much they go through in a week but I put a lot in the cage with my two girls. They love to romp and play in it and they love to hide under in while they nibble on it.

There is no specific amount that guinea pigs should have in terms of hay. It says that they should have hay 24/7 meaning that they never run out. I recently put up a post asking the same question. Give them as much as they need. It could be any amount. (20 oz., 24 oz. or even more!) (Probably more!) Give them as much as thier hearts desire!!!

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

Idk but it never hurts to be prepared. By the way, I believe the OP is asking how much they eat so they'll know how much to buy a week.. not because they need to know how much to give every day. Guinea pigs and other pets, as I'm sure most of you know, thrive on routine and probably average the same amount of hay every week.

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

I know that they need hay 24/7, yes thats what I meant thief. I guess I''ll just start out with a 40 oz bag of hay. I'm going to buy hay from Oxbow, and pellets from KM.

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

I highly recommend ordering oxbow hay online, what I do is I order roughly 30 lbs of hay every month [25 of timothy hay and some botanical/oat/brome/orchard hay] for my three rabbits and I only pay around $35 + shipping [for me it's $60 all together]for it. They're at Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome
Oxbow has the highest quality pellets available, I recommend them too but I am not familiar with the KM brand. As long as it's timothy-based [for adults] and doesn't have "treats" or other nasty stuff in it it's good.

Why spend all that extra money on shipping from two different companies? I would suggest choosing one and ordering what you need from them. If you need other products or smaller quantities, then Oxbow is your best bet. Larger quantities, go with KM.

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

I know. I wanted to just buy Oxbow, but my mom said the pellets are cheaper at KM, and that we don't need 25 pounds of hay because it won't last very long, and that thats the least amount they have of hay. I deffinitely need smaller quantities, because I'm only getting two to start with.

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

I pointed out to my mom waht you said about it being cheaper buying from just one company, and she said we will just buy from Oxbow.

Re: Hay....how long does it last?

My three go through a large bag a day...I'm not such how much is in their bag, I can weight it for you if you like? I buy mine from my mums friend who grows her own in a horse field, nice stuff and £1 for a large bale.
