Question Freshness of Hay...

Right now, my two boys go through a 40oz bag of Oxbow timothy hay a month. After doing some math, I've discovered that the 25lb box they offer is the same as 10 of those bags...at half the price (and that includes shipping)!

My question: How does one keep a 25lb box of hay fresh for, roughly, 10 months? Or more importantly, WILL it stay fresh that long? My basement is cool and dry year-round if it's okay to keep it down there.

It will keep just fine. You use the cardboard box to store it. Be sure to pull out the plastic and store it in a cool dry place.

Re: Freshness of Hay...

As stated above - it will keep for a very long time if properly stored. Have you checked the price on KM hay? It may be comparable (or even cheaper) and its supposed to be the best quality hay you can buy.

I also think it is alright to keep it down there. Just make sure it is stored in a cool, low humidity place. Also, make sure the box is always closed.

Re: Freshness of Hay...

Actually, it's usually better to keep the box open. Keeping the box closed can allow humidity to collect in the box, and the hay can begin to mold.
