Yams are toxic if eaten raw? According to the nutrition chart, yams are in the 2-4/week category. So I bought some today but wanted to make sure they were yams, not sweet potatoes, so I googled them and came up with this info: Yam Selection and Storage Information that yams are toxic if eaten raw?? Is this true? And if they're OK to feed, I have to peel them first, right? Thanks.

Re: Yams are toxic if eaten raw? I've fed yams and sweet potatoes to my girls and none have died. I've washed them well then sliced off small portions for them to eat. They key is in moderation. If any veggie wasn't deemed safe, they wouldn't be on the charts. I do need to add that yams would be more of a twice per week food and not 3-4 times per week.

Re: Yams are toxic if eaten raw? I thought they'd be fine, but that article definitely gave me pause! So do you peel them or no? And do you think a 1/4 yam per pig once or twice a week is good? Thanks!

Re: Yams are toxic if eaten raw? I wouldn't feed that much. I'd go with about a 1" cube at most per pig once maybe twice per week. I don't peel anything I give my pigs. The peel has a lot of natural vitamins and minerals in them so I always leave them on. Just wash it well before feeding it.
