Question Hay Brands

What brands of hay are best? I use Kaytee. Are there any better brands out there? I've heard of Oxbow.

Re: Hay Brands

Kaytee is quite low in quality. Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome and Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home are the best brands.

Re: Hay Brands

Any brand is ok as long as it's green, good smelling and free of mold. Kaytee is ok but make sure it has more green strands in it than brown. There are higher quality hays such as KM's (best there is in my opinion) and others like Oxbow. I've heard Farmer Dave's hay is pretty good too although I haven't tried that one myself.

I normally buy bales of hay locally. I get bermuda here in my area. I like to pick out the bale I buy myself. Occasionally I get strange looks from the guy who goes out to load it for me.

Re: Hay Brands

It is almost all green and it smells very good. My guinea pig loves it.

Re: Hay Brands

I get hay from a local feedstore, they ushally have different kinds each time I go and right now the hay I have is Brome, its a really nice brome too, and it was $5.99 for a full square bale. I always check the hay out myself too, and get alot of strange looks

Re: Hay Brands

I love American Pet Diner. It's always so fresh, green, smells great. Delivery is prompt and shipping isn't bad.

It's the recommended hay on Cavy Spirit if I recall correctly.

The chinchillas starting eating about twice as much hay when I switched to APD. Oxbow and KM were good as well, but they didn't seem to get as excited about it. And sometimes I would get a batch that wasn't as good. APD is consistantly great in my experience.

I would almost eat it myself!

Re: Hay Brands

I have to disagree with the majority here regarding Oxbow. I have never had a good batch of hay from them. I prefer Kaytee. I think its because the Kaytee has a faster turnover rate in our area. It is always fresh here while the Oxbow is not.

That being said, I have not tried KM but will be ordering soon as I have heard that her hay is the absolute best.
