Smile I am so proud of my boys

They just tried some new things. I had some fruit for lunch and at the same time I fed them their lettus. Well I decided to give them each a small bite of an orange and a banana. Ramone loved both! Paco just nibbled and went back to his lettus.

Dont start scolding me I know both are on the do not feed often list. You know how you slice a bannana for cereal? Well thats what I did for them 1 small slice about the size of a quarter cut in half. Just enough to taste. I gave them one cross section slice of orange to share as well. Ramone took that in his hidey hut with him. What impressed me is that he actually came out to get it while I was still near the cage. That is a major step for him. Paco is already letting me rub his nose for food but Ramone always has this look on his face like he is saying oO(go away)

Anyway I am very happy because I havent been sucessful in getting them to try new fruit or veggies other than lettus since they got here.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Why would you get scolded for feeding your pigs something that is allowed even if not often? It sounds like it was the first time that you fed them orange and banana. Just don't feed it to them every day.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Well I worded my post that way because in my short time as a member I have come to find that there are many people here that are very snarly and short with others. Its as if they believe no one else knows how to care for their pets properly. I just didn't want someone raining on my parade but apparently that is too much to ask.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Thats not true at all.

No-one is perfect. Everyone has their own opinion on whats right and whats not. Many members here are very passionate about their animals, about the welfare of other animals and about being pro-rescue and anti-breeding, but that doesnt mean that I believe that no-one else knows how to take care of their pets properly, and I strongly believe that the majority of the members of the forums would agree with me as well.

There is no problem in feeding your pigs fruit, so long as it is only fed occasionally due to the high water and sugar content. For information on how often you should feed certain foods check out Lys nutrition charts, which is a sticky located at the top of the nutrition forum.

I dont mean to offend you. I actually wasnt talking about just one person or even on just one subject. And yes there are very cold responses at times. There actually seems to be a critical spirit looming over this site. Its bothered me since I started reading. I have read through threads all over this site where people are ripped apart because they word something wrong. That is why I was explaining exactly what I did with the fruit so that no one would get their underware in a knot and well someone did because I was explaining myself. oh well.

Don't get me wrong I am very thankful for the information here. I actually have a print out of the chart that was given to me by the person that I adopted my boys from. It is hanging on my fridge.

I don't want to cause any trouble but I just needed to get that off my chest. I am taking a deep breath and now I am done.

Oh no, you did not offend me. I have not seen any cold responses so to speak, I have seen some very passionate responses though.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Banana can cause bloat and bloat is a very serious medical condition that requires emergency care. That is why banana should not be fed often. Oranges can be fed more often than banana. Oranges can be fed on a once-twice weekly basis while banana is more a once or twice a month type fruit.

If people come along and tell you not to feed this or that or to feed it very sparingly, well there is a good reason behind it. VJ and I sat up very late one night with a member who's pig developed bloat from eating banana. We were afraid the member was going to lose her pig. So this is why we highly recommend that it not be fed at all but if you want to take that chance then do it in tiny amounts and rarely.

And so you know, just because you post something doesn't automatically mean you are going to get jumped on. I think you are in a way jumping to conclusions and making assumptions. Not every post has someone being snarky or someone getting jumped on. The majority of members are very passionate about animal welfare including their own pigs and everyone elses pigs. I am one of them. You talk about people and this site being critical, but yet here you are being critical of this site.

I have to say though that when people make statements like "don't scold me for ______ or don't jump on me for _______", it's almost like asking for an invitation to be scolded, especially in the instances where they know breeding or buying pigs from petstores is wrong but yet they do it anyway. Maybe if you didn't put things like that then there wouldn't be a problem.

Not to rain on your parade, but you sound snarly and short.

You post telling us you fed your pigs something I have always read is perfectly acceptable to feed occasionally. You give a pre-emptive snarl demanding that no one get short with you, then you borderline insult some of the posters of the board. Then you say it is too much to ask for people not to rain on your parade?

No one rained on your fruit parade, they just responded to your comments about how rude they can be...

Self fulfilling prophecy!

Edit: Sorry, I'm a bit late here! My browser is caching wrong and loaded yesterday's version of this post and I didn't see about the last 5 replies.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

mauahahah, you're too late, it already emailed me your reply!

It's okay, really. I'm happy for your fruit parade as well.

It just came off rude to me...how something came off to me isn't really up for debate. I'm new and haven't participated in anything to have a guilty conscious about.

It just isn't a big deal. Good pig parents should never fight..we don't have much to fight about, we all agree!

I'm sorry! Lets just all wheek at each other and get along like our piggys do. I asked the mod to close this so everyone can start over fresh. Honestly up until a month ago I knew nothing about Guinea Pigs and when I started here reading some of the threads it made me second guess weather or not to post anything. My guinea got stuck under the bed and we faced that disaster alone because I was afraid to ask. He came out fine though after we dismantled the bed.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

It's not funny but I totally laughed at the image of you dismantling the bed to get a guinea pig out.

If I was a guinea pig, I'd definitely be the one that kicks the other pigs out of the pigloo to sleep for 30 seconds then leaves.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Hi Mom! - I understand how you may have interpreted(?) some responses, but what I have found here is a unique community of pet people that do have a deep concern for and a sense of ownership of piggies in general. I truly believe that the driving force behind any response is the welfare of the piggs first. We can't see their faces when they respond and can't fully perceive their intent, as we can when it's a face to face conversation but you can have confidence in their concern and desire for the best for the "kids". There is a wealth of support, information and ideas here and you are an important part of the sharing. It's really exciting when the little stinkers warm up to you or respond in a different way. Thank you for letting us in on your good news.
And by the way, the image of you dismantling the bed for the pigg is funny.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

I don't like closing threads unless there is a really good reason and I don't feel this one needs closed at this time.

I will ask members not to jump on the original poster about any of their comments as enough has been said already. Anyone who doesn't follow this directive will find their post unapproved from public view.

Re: I am so proud of my boys

Daboysmom -

I understand what you are saying. Don't feel sorry for saying it and don't apologize for your perception. There are great people on this site - and amazing information about guinea pigs. I am so thankful that I found it. Yet - I agree that it can get quite militant at times. But - you know - it's a trade off. You wouldn't expect much less from people who care about their pigs so much to dedicate this much time to learning about them - so you just decide to deal with it - or to not.

Cheers
