How big (volume-wise) is 35lbs of Kleenmama's hay

I want to order a big bulk of hay from Kleenmama's (first time) and I just want to know approximately what volume 35lbs would be from those of you who have ordered this amount. I read that the hay needs to be stored in an open container, so I'm just wondering how large of a container it will take since I live in a small apartment with limited space. I'm thinking something like a 40-gallon storage container would be a good idea, but I really have no clue!

Thanks!

Re: How big (volume-wise) is 35lbs of Kleenmama's hay

We get the 45 pound size of bluegrass. It comes in a box 18.5" wide on each side by 24" high (closed). We leave the top open so the hay can stay aired out.

I'm sure the 35 pound box would be smaller. We also live in a very tiny apartment, but we have no problem having enough room for the 45 pound box.

You don't need a separate storage container, you can leave the hay in the box that it comes in. Just remove the plastic wrap from it, and leave it in the cardboard box with the top open. You want to store it out in the open (as opposed to an enclosed closet, etc.) with the top of the box open to allow the hay to stay dry.

Thanks, Wheek Weak. Wow, they must really pack the hay into the box then. I was imaging a huge box for some reason, ha! That's great news. Thanks again. I'm really excited to get it in the mail. I ordered last night. About how long does it usually take to ship? I'm sure it varies by location.

When I ordered it for the first time I emailed the woman who ships the fleece and she let me know it would be about 7-10 days ground. I live in New Jersey.

I get 10lbs at once and don't have a good storage solution for more. It's getting painful ordering it every few weeks.

Is it really that bad, Biscuit? From what Wheek Weak said above, I figured it would work out fine. Now I'm getting worried again, since I ordered 35lbs. Maybe I should have ordered less for my first time! Ugh, ha.

Re: How big (volume-wise) is 35lbs of Kleenmama's hay

I have 2 pigs and I ordered 25 lbs. I don't know maybe my pigs don't eat as much hay as everyone else's but I've only gone through about 1/8 of that in a month. I'm guesstimating it's been about a month since I got it now.

I ordered 1/2 timothy and 1/2 bluegrass. The problem I had was they came in two separate bags - so I took both bags out planning to empty them out of the plastic back into the box. Well, once I dumped the bluegrass in - there was no room left for the timothy! It decompressed once dumped into the box!! So now I have an open bag and the open box - luckily we have a spare bedroom. We're in a condo so we don't have a ton of room. I bought a tall kitchen garbage can to put next to their cage - It can hold about 1/4 of my 25lbs. So I just will refill that as I need to.

Just be careful dumping the hay out of the plastic if order more than one type of hay because it will expand once out of the plastic! It's compressed but not tied up.

Ha, don't mind me, I have serious mental issues with any mess. I wouldn't worry! 35lbs if you have a decent place to store it like mentioned above will be fine.

I live in a smallish condo and keep the box with holes in a closet, then take a particular rubbermaid style container with holes to the closet and fill it up. A few pieces of hay fall out and I have to inject myself with horse tranquilizers asap to avoid anxiety attacks (<--kidding!).

The Container Store > Shop Totes > Stacking Storage Boxes

I store in this. It has handy holes all down the sides!
