Re: Can guinea pigs eat banana's and apple's????

It can but veryyyy rarely (once a month at least I imagine) as it can cause constipation...
Apple is fine but again in moderate amounts once a week as it can cause mouth sores..

Fruits should be limited due to their high water and sugar content. Apples can be fed occasionally (1-2 times a week), bananas 1-2 times a month. Bananas can constipate so feed in small amounts. You may find Lys Nutrition Charts ( http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...arts-info.html ) helpful.

Re: Can guinea pigs eat banana's and apple's????

Apple is fine in limited amounts. I do not feed banana as it can be dangerous. There have been reports of GPs getting severely ill/constipated and even a couple of deaths that may have been caused by feeding banana.

Banana can cause constipation. If it gets bad enough it can block the intestines causing the stomach to fill with gas, turn on it's axis and cut off blood supply to vital organs. This condition is commonly called Bloat but the true medical term is Gastric Dilatation Volvulus. This condition will cause death 100% of the time unless emergency surgery is preformed to rotate the stomach back into position and relieve the gas build-up. Even with surgery the prognosis is poor.

Another risk is potassium overdose. It is well documented that excess potassium can cause heart arrhythmia. it's hard for a human to eat enough banana to cause this condition but GPs are much smaller and have much bigger appetites. It is possible that too much banana could lead to potassium overdose and heart attack.

For more information (and a lively debate) you can visit this thread http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...s-bananas.html

Re: Can guinea pigs eat banana's and apple's????

When I was younger I had an old guinea pig and her teeth were falling out and bananas were the only thing she could eat. I had no idea they could cause all those problems. I've never fed a banana since, but she really enjoyed hers!
