Veg causing excess urine

My Peruvian Tallulah has always had a good varied diet, but shes also also had a damp bottom area...we keep it trimmed as much as possible and frequently groom her. We have ruled out a URI, Bladderstones and the bedding. We went to the vet and was told to stop feeding veg for a week and see how she went, we did this and she become dry. We began to ween her back on with dryer veg such as parsley etc and as soon as she has more than say a tiny section of green leaf, a cm of carrot and a peice of parsley shes got a very wet rear end the next day.
I'm really confused about what to do because surely I cant not give her veg. We feed her on Supa Guinea Pig Excel which contains all the vitimins needed, but I'm still worried she is missing out...
Should I just feed her a tiny amount prehaps and then use supplements (not those mineral lick things - proper supplements).

I wil be greatfull for any suggestions! Thanks..

Re: Veg causing excess urine

What veggies do you feed exactly? If you are frequently feeding parsley and greens (a type of cabbage) then I would be worried about your piggy having excess calcium in her diet. What bedding do you use? Does she smell of urine at all? You said you ruled out a URI and bladder stones, how did you do this?

Re: Veg causing excess urine

It varies alot to be honest...they dont get parsley everyday but they do get cabbage which i thought was ok because a guide on here said it was. I use woodshavings but I always make sure its skipped out and the surface is dry, and a big skip out every 7 days, but usually its twice a week. She does smell of urine quite abit when she gets very wet..
We took her to the vet and we got Baytrill and Fibre Paste...she had those for a week and she seemed fine by the end of that week (no veg at all that week), when she stopped these and got barely any veg again she was fine...it was as soon as more veg got added to the diet. Bladder stones I doubt she has because there has never been any sign of pain, blood, whiteness etc and the vet did have a feel and she couldnt feel any stones, but we didnt think she had that to begin with.
If it was a URI she would probably be wet regardless of the veg, but it does seem to be the veg that is causing this pee'ing.
Thanks for replying, very greatful

Re: Veg causing excess urine

You can't rule out bladder stones unless your piggy has been x-rayed I'm afraid. I would certainly cut down the cabbage and replace with something like romaine. I don't feed it to mine at all as it makes two of them gassy.

Baytril is not the antibiotic of choice for UTIs (just realised above I typed URIs, I meant UTIs). This is because it works better on bacteria in an oxygen-rich environment such as the lungs. Septrin (trimethoprim) works better on anaerobes, the (non-oxygen requiring) bacteria found to cause problems in the bladder.

The shavings you buy here in the UK are absolute junk. They are dusty (yes, even the dust extracted ones) and loaded with oils that will do nothing to help your piggy. Since females have a urinary tract that is low to the ground it is very easily irritated. I would certainly try changing the bedding - it couldn't hurt.

Anyway, I hope some of the above helps and at least gives you some other avenues to try.

Re: Veg causing excess urine

Is your pig long haired? Does she drink a lot? Pigs don't get wet bottoms from eating veggies. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of several things including UTI, stones/sludge, diabetes and just drinking a lot in general.

Cabbage is on my charts but it's to be fed once or twice per week in small amounts as it's a cruciferous veggie and can cause a lot of gas. It's not an every day food. You'd do better to get your pig on a good diet of a variety of veggies including daily lettuces, cilantro instead of parsley, other leafy greens (see charts to see how often some can be fed). You really shouldn't stop feeding veggies because your pig pees a lot. If you were feeding really wet veggies then feed them drier.

Re: Veg causing excess urine

She is long haired but her bottom area is trimmed quite oftern and is usually quite if not very short. She doesnt drink that much, I'd say average amount.
I was wondering about diabeties aswell but thought surely she would be wet all the time, thats whats confusing me, she isnt..
I'm going to draw up a feeding chart tonight for them using your chart, thank :].
I wasnt very happy with the idea of no veg ethier tbh and I'm thinking of going back to the vets for a second oppinion, and prehaps an xray and a few tests.
