Picky piggy does not like pills.

Say that three times fast.

I got the oxbow GTN-50C tabs for my piggies. One of them Gizmo will take it right out of my hand and eat it on the spot. My other pig Mojo does not seem intrested.

I've tried to give them the tabs when they are both out hoping that Mojo would see Gizmo eating them and try it himself but no luck.

Any advice for to persuade a picky piggy to eat his pills?

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

Wait are these 'tabs' prescribed by a vet?
What do they do, and are they mandatory?
If they are not and optional to use as something extra to help out on making sure he gets his viatamins I wouldn't force him to take them but if they were prescribed by the vet, perhaps you can put them inside a special fruit or veggie that they like?

My vet recommended that they have a C supplement. They are relatively young at about 7-9 months. Both are also pretty picky at veggies. Out of lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, celery and peppers they only eat the first two.

I thought of crushing them up and sprinkling them on their romain lettuce because they love that and hopefully it would soak in after washing and not fall off.

Maybe I was wrong in the context but I read here of people giving them these Oxbow tabs or even crushing and using regular vitamin C tabs. If I’m wrong please let me know.

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

I too, have heard of people doing this but me not having any expierience with this doesn't help. My guinea has been fine with veggies always and loves them. I think it may be a good idea to first wash the lettuce and while it is damp sprinkle it on. I generally don't think vitamin C tabs or vitamin tabs are necessary but I guess it is alright as your pigger doesn't like any veggies. Here are a few helpful links:

Maybe you should attempt to try some other veggies?

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

I give those same pills to my guinea pig each day and use it as a treat. She doesn't eat the pill whole, so I break it into 4th and put it in her pellet dish. She loves them.

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

The GTN tabs are a vitamin C supplement you can by from Oxbow. They are to help pigs get enough C they may not be getting from their diet. I would only give 1/2 tab per pig daily though. Pigs need 10-30mg of C per kg of weight daily. These tabs are 50 mg so half would be 25 and they will get the rest of their C from the pellets and veggies. I don't recommend giving these to pigs who get a nice varied diet of veggies and eat them fine. Basically they are for sick pigs who aren't eating or for pigs who haven't learned to eat a lot of veggies like in Quack's case.

You can crush it and put it on the wet lettuce. If that doesn't work then try sprinkling it over the pellets.

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

I give the Oxbow 50c supplement to my new pig, who has no idea what to do with veggies yet. I fill a small 1cc syringe up with water, put the pill in a little plastic dish along with 1cc water, and crush the pill using a spoon. Then I'll suck it back into the syringe, and give it to the piggy as a sort of drink. My pigs have never liked to eat the C in the pill form, so this way I've found is easier.

Re: Picky piggy does not like pills.

Get some cranberry juice concentrate (100%) and crush the pill into that with a little bit of water. Piggies can not get enough of the cranberry flavour
