Preparation Question

Hi there everyone. I have a food question. Next week my son will be in the hospital. My husband will be the one feeding our guinea pig. Do you think preparing her breakfast and dinner and putting them in separate zip lock bags would work? I'm worry about the lettuce wilting too much. The less preparation he has to do, the better.

Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

Re: Preparation Question

Thats exactly what I would do. Also (knowing my fiance) I would lable them so they aren't only getting lettuce or only peppers!LOL With perorganizing all the veg you will have peace of mind that they are also getting proper prportions.
Good luck, hope your son is ok. Well wishes sent your way.

Re: Preparation Question

Thanks for the input...What about pre-chopping/tearing the lettuce? I'm afraid if I just put a leaf of romaine in a bag, she'll get the whole big leaf!

Re: Preparation Question

Mine do get a whole leaf. That's how I used to feed out heads of lettuce. Stand in the middle of the cages and count pigs every time I tore a leaf off. 1 leaf for that pig, 2 pigs, 3 pigs, next cage, 4 pigs, 5 pigs, 6 pigs.... Oh look the lettuce is gone now on to peppers.

So long as you bought the lettuce fresh it will survive a few days chopped up. I cut all my veggies up weekly into plastic containers and then left the lids cracked so all anyone had to do was dump in a container. It lasted the week chopped up so long as the containers weren't air tight. In a plastic bag it won't last quite as long but would do for a few days. The paper towel will help if the lettuce is wet from either rinsing or just from how much they overspray things in the stores. Overwet veggies don't last as long.

Re: Preparation Question

Ziplck bags work great....I use them sometimes if I have someone else feeding the piggies. When I went on vacation for 10 days....I chopped and bagged several days worth of food so that my pig sitter's job was easier. I have a Food Saver too...That really helps to keep food fresh...I wouldn't go out to buy one, but if you have one, that works even better....But, the ziplock bags would work fine....I would label them breakfast and dinner...that's pretty much error proof!

Re: Preparation Question

What I do is if I am going to be away, I make all there dinners and put them in bowls covered in foil and in the fridge, then who ever I have feed them there salads just has to take it out of the fridge and take the foil off and put it in the cage. Also be sure he knows that she needs hay at all times and that she should only get 1/8th a cup of pellets (unless they are timothy based or she is under 6 mths) because alot of times if I forget to tell who ever watches my pigs that they only get 1/8 a cup of pellets each a day, they will see they have none (since they gobble them up right away) and give them a whole bowl full
