I keep my hay in open-topped boxes with small holes poked in the sides for air circulation. So I guess rubbermaid containers and boxes both work fine, as long as the hay can breathe.

If you own a drill you could drill a bunch of small holes in all of the sides of the rubbermaid bin - that way it would provide air flow and you could put the lid on - though I would just set the lid on top and not "snap" it down completely.

That is a really good idea. I could totally see our cats pooping in the boxes of hay if they didnt have the lids on them. Silly things.
