Sharp, um, hay things

I have Oxbow oat hay that I occasionally give my cavies. After the last handful, I noticed that bits were sharp and dug into the fleece, they were difficult to pull out even one by one by hand. The small ones seem impossible. It's the stem(?) after the seeds(?) are gone. (I'm very bad with plants, sorry.) I will buy new fleece likely within the next few weeks, but I'm afraid it might hurt their feet in the meantime.

Um I think this picture might be a bit large... http://www.diablogod.com/SANY0027.JPG but you can see some big ones clearly.

I'm afraid I don't have any useful advice for you, but I'm curious about the oat hay. The bags of Oxbow oat hay I've seen look almost like straw, with very thick stems. Do your pigs ever eat the stems and leaves, or do they just nibble the seeds off?

I've never seen hay like that before, but I know when I use to buy kaytee timothy hay I would get hard and straw like pieces in there so I always use to either pick them out and throw them away or I would stick good peices through the bars so that the pigs could chew on them but not hurt them.

Re: Sharp, um, hay things

I give my pigs Oat hay from Oxbow from time to time as well as a treat. Mainly they eat the seed head which is mainly husk as the hay is immature at this point. The stems they tend to chew on some times but mostly they love the seed heads. I have been using the Oat hay as a treat for a few years now and have not had any problems with it and they absolutely go gaa gaa for it. I would say if you are concerned at all but want to give it to them than you can just strip off the the stems and give them the rest as a treat.

It looks almost like a weed to me. Is there anyway you could contact Oxbow, do they have a website? I have a box of oxbow timothy hay that I occasionally feed on top of my grass hay and I've never seen anything like that.

What is oat hay?
