Kleenmama's hay

I am really tempted to order from Kleenmama's. I understand they are very well liked here. I have been feeding my piggies Oxbow hay. I need some advice on Kleenmama's.

- How is their hay quality? Are they really dust free? Are they hand packed, like Oxbow? Anyone had any bad experience with them? Any bugs/foreign materials in the hay?

- Is their shipping fast? I'm in Boston.

I have only been getting the 40oz Oxbow hay and 25 lbs seems a lot and I have two piggies. If I order, I would be getting the timothy and bluegrass.

Any input is very much appreciated, thanks!!

Re: Kleenmama's hay

KM isn't a corporation or company like oxbow. She's a woman who has the help of her family to do all the packing and shipping. No hay in the world is dust free but her hay is very high quality, she ensures this when she visits hay farmers to purchase the hay.

From time to time there will be foreign materials in hay no matter where it comes from. She and her family handpack each box that is shipped. The order is usually shipped within a couple days after payment is complete.

Her hays are the best quality you will find anywhere in my opinion. Her bluegrass is to die for. It's very green and soft. The 3rd cut timothy is also really good.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Hey Ly, I cannot afford to have kleenmama's shipped, and they sell Oxbow in my area, but they don't seem to offer a bluegrass hay. Aside from Alfalfa and Timothy, is there another type I should feed my cavys?

Re: Kleenmama's hay

There are several varieties of grass hays you can feed. Alfalfa is a legume hay. Legume hays are higher in calcium than grass hays. Grass hay is the most important of all hays for your pigs because they are low in calcium, have the needed vitamin and minerals and should be one of the main staples of all pigs diet from the time they are born until they cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Types of grass hay include: timothy, bermuda (also called coastal), orchard grass, bluegrass, prairie grass, etc. It doesn't matter which type you feed as long as you feed it in unlimited amounts so they never run out. If you want to feed your pigs a variety of hays, well that's great but it isn't necessary. Sometimes it's nice to change up varieties once in a while so they don't get bored eating the same kind always but some pigs are picky and will only eat certain kinds of grass hay.

There are also grain hays that can be fed but those should be more of a treat type hay. Those are wheatgrass, rye, oat, etc.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

I love Kleenmammas hay. The prices are great and the quality is wonderful. My pigs love the bluegrass. I've had this batch of hay for about 2 months now and it still smells so fresh and good when I open the bag. I won't get my hay from anywhere else!

Re: Kleenmama's hay

I've always ordered from Oxbow and have had fantastic results, but recently I ordered Kleenmama's bluegrass hay and my piggies adore it! I think they are both very high quality and I plan to stick with a mix of timothy and bluegrass for my spoiled piggies. I would go ahead and order a large amount, then when you get the large box just empty the bag of hay into the cardboard and keep the lid open so there is plenty of air flow. Beware, this is a messy process so do it outside or be prepared to do lots of clean up! It's also a bit dusty, so beware of contacts or allergies. Once it's in the box, it's very easy to get to and lasts a long time. I recently ordered 50 lbs. of timothy and 25 lbs. of bluegrass for my 11 piggies, so I'll be set for a few months. I keep the boxes right under the cage.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Oh. Sounds really good. I'm going to get half timothy and half bluegrass. But I just don't know if I should just get 5 lbs each. I'm just wondering, although I know it's very highly unlikely, what if I get 35lbs and my pigs don't like it? I'm very sure that won't happen but still.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Most piggies love bluegrass, but if you're worried you could get a small amount to start off. In the long run, I would try to switch to ordering larger quantities because you will save a lot of money.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Sorry to steal your thread but I have one quick and related question to ask.

Does anyone know how long it would take two 3ib males to go through 35 ibs or hay or what about 25ibs of hay? Does anyone know?

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Perhaps you should calculate what your piggies eat on an average day and use that to figure out? I imagine it's different for different piggies. Just weigh out a pound of hay and see how long they take to eat it, then multiply that by 25 or 35 to see how long it would take for them to finish that amount.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

KM hay is probably the best hay you can get. I buy the bluegrass and it is always fresh when I get it. Their 3rd cut Timothy is just as good. Its the only timothy hay I will buy. Their shipping time is real good also, usually within a week or so.

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Kleenmama's is great hay. The shipping to New England is fairly slow and expensive, but since my other choice was little tiny bags of pet store hay, the KM's was a great deal. I also ordered their pellets, which are also great and come highly recommended.

I ordered 9lbs of bluegrass, 9lbs of Timothy, and 5lbs of alfalfa (since we have a baby). It's a lot of hay! we only have the one piggy right now (working on finding her a friend) and it seems like it will last us "forever" and in fact I think we may not use up the alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets before we need to switch them off of it even if we get another baby!

Hope that helps!

Thumbs up Re: Kleenmama's hay

My 2 boys absolutely love KM's hay! I ordered 25lbs. of the 1/2 timothy 1/2 bluegrass mixture, and have been using large amounts of it in my piggers hay area. My Bear loves to just lay down on the soft bluegrass while munching on the hay, so in addition to putting it in the baskets and hay rack for them to eat, I also use it as bedding in the hay room, which has to be changed out quite frequently because hay isn't very absorbent. But I have been working out of the 25lb. box for near 3 weeks now, and the box still has a lot of hay left, it looks practically full still, which is amazing. It seems to be never-ending. I had no idea how much hay 25lbs. actually is, LOL! The price was really great, and even with shipping, I am making a very significant savings compared to when I used to buy the largest bags of the Kaytee junk. It is going to last me much, much longer, and I am able to be a lot more generous with it. Not to mention how green and fresh it is! I don't think I will ever buy anything else. (I also ordered 10lbs. of her Timothy pellets, which are great, too.)

I'll attach a photo of my Tutter enjoying the hay, to show you how much they love it, and how green it is!

Re: Kleenmama's hay

Tutter seems to be really enjoying it!

I placed an order earlier today for 9lbs 3rd cut timothy and 9lbs bluegrass. Can't wait for it to come.

Thanks again for all the responses and the cute pigture!
