All piggies under a year.....

....and the only petstore in my state that carries Oxbow pellets only has the Cavy Cuisine, not the Cavy Performance (the one for uner 6 months I think). Do I really have to give them different pellets? I have a seven month old and three 2 month olds. (I can't order online, because I live in Hawaii and the shipping for pellets is astronomical--something like $40 for 10 lbs!)

All of my babies get unlimited timothy hay, fresh veggies twice a day and Oxbow pellets. Am I doing okay?

Re: All piggies under a year.....

You can feed the Cavy Cuisine and give both grass hay and alfalfa hay. The younger ones really need the extra calcium as they are growing. It won't hurt they older pig. I'd add a bit of alfalfa hay into the grass hay about every other day plus feed them all some kale about 3 times per week. Just alternate the days you feed the kale and alfalfa hay. The reason I recommend Kale (about 1/2 a large leaf or one small leaf per pig) is because it's a high calcium veggie. They need the extra calcium while they are young to ensure strong bones. Even the 7 month old can have kale and alfalfa right now like I suggested until he/she's about a year old. When the pups turn 6 months old, then I'd probably cut the alfalfa down to a couple times per week or cut it out altogether but I'd still feed kale a couple times per week at that point.

Thank you Ly. I picked up Alfalfa hay today but couldn't find Kale at our grocery store (Safeway). I have to check out a few other local supermarkets.
